- About the Author
As I made it to the front of the line with folks all positioning themselves to get in, Danni walked out looking like a super runway model. She wore tall cowboy boots, designer blue jeans, a Louis Vuitton pocketbook, a white Von Dutch tank top, gold jewelry, and curly light-brown hair with sunshades in it. She was still tipsy, and strutting like she was on an actual stage.
By the time she made it through the crowds and held out her hand to mine, all eyes were on her, and then on us as a couple. Danni was obviously putting on a show.
“Here I am, baby. All for you.”
I smiled at her and pulled her into a hug. She was making me feel proud to be the one.
She said, “You know you’re making me leave my girlfriend. And with my car at that.”
That spoke volumes. Danni had just gotten her new car. However, I don’t think she would have been driving home that night anyway.
I said, “I’m sure your girl will take good care of it. You did give her the keys, right?”
I was already guiding her across the street to my car, and the crowd was still looking. It all made me feel like a big man on campus.
Danni was all smiles, smelling good and looking good.
“So where are we going?” she asked me.
“I want to order you dinner in bed,” I told her.
What the hell, I was feeling extravagant.
She stopped me at the car and said, “I’m not dreaming, am I?”
“Why would you think that?”
“Because you…you…” She couldn’t even get her words out. I guess she was trying to say that I was being uncharacteristically considerate. I usually played the I’m-too-busy-for-you-but-in-the-meantime-let’s-get-naked role. Now I had all the time in the world for her. I guess the change was drastic.
Danni shook her head and strutted to the passenger side of my car.
“Okay,” she told me. “Let’s go.”
I had planned to walk her over to the door, but she beat me to it.
I clicked the doors open with my remote, and the parking guy caught my eye before I climbed in. He nodded his head in approval with an oversized grin.
He said, “I would have parked anywhere for her, too.”
I laughed. “You have a good night,” I told him.
I climbed into the Mercedes and looked into Danni’s curious face as I slid behind the wheel.
“Terrance, can I ask you a question?”
I paused and studied her. She was really listening for my sincerity.
“Yeah.”
“Where have you been all my life?”
I just started to chuckle. Doing a woman right for a change was a good feeling.
“Yeah. Good question,” I told her, and I drove off.
I GOT DANNI BACK to my place and ran warm water in my Jacuzzi. I figured we’d take a relaxing bath together, dress comfortably in my complementary robes, and have a twilight dinner from All Occasions Catering, who had a late-night taxi service for those who could afford it. These guys did all their business through credit card, with tips and driver fees all paid in advance. They would deliver full-course meals to your home, apartment, or condo up until two o’clock in the morning. Who else would do that outside of pizza and Buffalo wing joints? I thought it was a grand idea, and they had much of the wealthy, romantic crowd of Atlanta on lockdown.
