“And you can continue to live like that? I mean, what’s your motivation?”
That question was a lot easier for me. I answered, “Easy living and good travel. I don’t ask for much. And I pretty much get that.”
“What about from a woman?”
“Well, you know what I want from a woman,” I told her with a grin. “But it always seems like as soon as you get a little bit too close to them, they start changing all the rules. That just happened to me a few weeks ago. Next thing I knew, I’m fucking everybody, and two girls at a time. I never did that before.”
She paused for a minute. Then she said, “So, you’re obviously in with the wrong crowd of people then. Maybe you need to change your scenery.”
“To what, hanging out with celibates who practice yoga and eat fruit all day? I mean, this is my crowd. I just have to get back in control of it,” I told her.
Judi sighed. “You’re still fighting me, Terrance, but I’m not your enemy. I’m sure you’ve already met your enemy.”
I looked over at the bloody clothes I had tossed onto the passenger seat and knew that she was right.
I joked and said, “So if I came down there and spent a few weeks or so with you, then I know I would be doing the right thing, huh?”
“It’s not all about you coming down here to see me. You have to live the right way wherever you are,” she responded. “That’s like folks going to church on Sunday while sinning Monday through Saturday. They need to live by the way of God every day if they’re going to claim it. I mean, I’m not calling myself or anyone else perfect, but at least be consistent.”
“They are consistent, consistent in going to church on Sunday,” I joked. Keeping things lighthearted was the only way for me to maintain my cool sometimes.
Before Judi could respond, my cell phone started warning me of a low battery.
“Hey, Judi, you know what. I’m gonna have to call you back in a few once I get back in the house. I need to recharge this phone.”
“Oh, well, do what you have to do, and just call me when you’re ready. I’ll be here.”
“Good. I’ll call you back later on tonight then.”
She said, “Terrance, do you realize what time it is?”
I looked at my car clock; it was twelve thirty-eight.
I answered, “It’s nearly a quarter till one in the morning. Why?”
“When are you planing on calling back, before three?”
“Well, why are you calling me this late?” I asked her.
“Actually, I was just calling to leave you another message to call me when you got the chance to. But I guess you’ve been busy running wild out in the streets.”
“Yeah, well let me get in off the streets before my battery runs out.”
“Okay, I’ll talk to you.”
