“What’s wrong?” he said, worry coming through clear.

Gretchen didn’t have it in her to beat around the bush. “Tell me about the baby, our second baby.” Wyatt didn’t answer. Gretchen checked her phone to make sure the call was still connected. “Wyatt?”

“Yeah, I’m here. I just don’t think I should be the one you talk to about this.”

“Please. Jax won’t tell me. I’m pretty sure she’d keep it from me forever.”

“I don’t think so. It was a hard time for both of you, and Jax probably wants to keep you both from reliving it again.”

Anger flared within Gretchen. “That’s not fair and you know it.” Wyatt went quiet again. “Is that when everything started to go wrong?”

“Honestly, Gretchen, I don’t know. I had no idea things had gotten so bad between you two. I was floored when I found out you had split. One minute you were dancing at my wedding, and the next Jax was telling me she moved out.”

Gretchen balled up the letter in her hand and threw it. “This is so hard to explain, but I have no recollection of losing the baby, absolutely none, but knowing I did…I feel hollow now. Like my body remembers the loss even when my brain doesn’t.”

“I’m so, so sorry Gretchen. And I’m sorry you didn’t hear it from Jax. I don’t know what’s up with her lately, but she’s barely speaking to me, too.”

She hated the way her mind and heart betrayed her by instantly worrying about Jax. She had no one else to turn to. Wyatt was her family, but she supposed Jax had Meredith now. “My injury hasn’t been easy for anyone.”

“Aside from all this horrible shit, how are you feeling?”

She wanted to laugh and scream and cry. “Physically, I feel great. My body has bounced back, and the doctor said I could go back to work next week.”

“That’s great. I’m sure you’ll feel even better once you’re back into the normal swing of things.”

“I hope,” she said sullenly, knowing the normal swing would never feel normal without Jax. “What about you? How’s Carly feeling?”

“She’s gonna go into labor any day now, and I don’t know how I feel about that.” Wyatt and Gretchen laughed together. “We’re both tired of waiting. We’re just ready to have this kid already.”

“Are you having a boy or girl?”

“We don’t know, actually. We still want to be surprised.”

“That’s wonderful. Either way, Caleb will be lucky to have them as his best friend.”

“I couldn’t agree more.”
