“Who would I have told? I wouldn’t have told Wyatt or Carly, and the only other person I talked to regularly was—” Gretchen grabbed her phone from her purse and started dialing.

Amanda held her arms up in question. “Thanks for the suspense.”

Gretchen held up her index finger as she waited for an answer.

“Shore Health Occupational Therapy. How may I direct your call?”

“This is Gretchen Mills. May I please speak with Omar Runge?” She gave Amanda a thumbs-up.

“Gretchen, hi, it’s Sharon. How are you feeling?”

“I’m doing okay.” Gretchen had no idea who Sharon was. “May I speak with Omar? It’s important.”

“I hope you’re calling to tell him you’re coming back. It’s not the same without you around here.”

Her patience was waning. “I am actually. Can I speak with him? Now, please?”

“Sure thing. Hang on.”

The hold music filled the phone and Gretchen turned to Amanda. She just blinked until the music stopped. She perked up.

“It’s so good to hear from you, Gretchen. How are you?”

“I’m fine. I want—”

“Are you ready to come back to work already?”

“Yes. I just need clearance from my doctor, which should be soon,” she said, not wanting to commit to work before she’d untangled her life. “Then I’ll be cleared for part-time. Look—”

“That’s great to hear.”

“Omar,” she said firmly. “I lost four years of my memories, and I need you to help me.” She decided to cut to the chase. “Why did I start working like I wanted to live my life at the office?”

His laugh was deep in the phone. “That’s a bit of a long story.”

“I’ve got time.”

Chapter Thirty-nine

“I can’t get over how perfect she is,” Jax said, touching the baby’s feet for what must’ve been the hundredth time. Wyatt and Carly had arrived home with little Bethany the day before, and Wyatt begged Jax to come over after work. The newborn wiggled before falling back into a sound slumber. “Enjoy these early days when all she does is sleep and gurgle.”

“And poop. Don’t forget all the poop.” Carly sat on the couch, looking exhausted.

She snickered. “And you’re just getting started.” She flicked the plush stars hanging above the baby on her swing and took a seat across from Carly.

Wyatt walked into the room with two bottles of beer. He handed one to Jax before sitting next to Carly. His eyes stayed on his daughter. “I can’t believe she’s here.”

“I can’t believe you managed to put her down for more than a minute.” Jax smiled around the bottle. She couldn’t get over how attached Wyatt had become in an instant, and she planned on teasing him about it for years to come.
