Unlike the steady pace Cami and I set while moving Ward through the corridors, Arryn and I are sprinting along the hallways, the breakout jostling in midair between us. This time I’m pushing his bare feet while she’s tugging at his shoulders, the two of us guiding him through the facility at breakneck speed.
I finally see the hidden doorway just a few feet ahead of us when shouting voices from around the next corner have us screeching to a halt. My eyes widen when a figure runs around the bend—a figure who stops in his tracks at the sight of us standing there.
“JD?”
Enzo is staring at me like he’s never seen me before. His dark eyes flick to the breakout and then to Arryn, his gaze resting on her for half a beat longer than the hovering boy, before returning to me.
I can read his “What the hell is going on?” expression as easily as if he’d said the words aloud. But he doesn’t utter them. Instead, his eyes flick to Arryn again, then back to me before he opens his mouth and bellows, “They must have backtracked! Quick, the other way!”
He gives me one last long look before he spins on his heel and takes off back the way he came, the sounds of fast-approaching footsteps scurrying to follow after him, fading the farther they travel from us.
“What just happened?” I breathe.
“Hurry,” Arryn urges, yanking the breakout forward.
I stumble after them, the shock and fear of our near discovery making my legs feel weak.
It’s only when the three of us have tumbled through the door and sealed it behind us that the roaring in my ears begins to ease.
“What just happened?” I repeat, panting.
Cami is looking between Arryn and me, wringing her hands. “What’s wrong? That alarm—did someone see you?”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Both Arryn and I speak at the same time. I send her a sharp glance, unsure why she answered in the negative, when clearly Enzo looked straight at us.
“We ran into Enzo,” I tell Cami before Arryn can come up with some lie—and why she would, I can’t say.
“You what?”
“It’s okay. He—He saved us.”
“How is that okay?”
Cami has a point. I have no idea why Enzo acted the way he did. Unless …
There’s only one explanation that comes to mind, and I turn slowly to look at Arryn as something Kael once said comes back to me.
We have a few people on the inside …
Keeda being an informant for the Remnants is one thing … but Enzo?
I hold Arryn’s gaze when I say, “He’s working with you, isn’t he?” Another part of the puzzle clicks into place and I gasp, “Wait. Is he … Is he Shadow? Your informant?”
“No, he’s not Shadow,” Arryn says in such a way that I believe her.
