Arryn releases a quiet laugh. “No, it wasn’t Kael. It was someone you haven’t been introduced to yet.”
“But he took you back to the Remnants, right?” Cami says. “Was it because Liana sensed you were a breakout Speaker, just like she did for this guy?” She gestures to the boy hovering beside Ward. “Is that how they found you?”
“Liana has an incredible gift,” Arryn confirms.
I hope I’ll soon get to meet the guy who changed the course of her life. There are so many of the Remnants I haven’t crossed paths with yet, but I’ll have to ask her to introduce us once we’re back under the zoo.
“That’s basically it,” Arryn says, forcing lightness into her tone. “I figured out how my Speaking ability worked, and slowly moved through the ranks over the last two years until I ended up in charge of security. Now, here I am.”
It’s an abrupt conclusion to her story, but I suppress any questions I have, not wanting to push her further.
“And here we are,” she adds, her emphasis prompting me to look up and see the beam of her flashlight bouncing off the end of the passage in front of us. “That walk wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Cami’s only response is to grumble about how I’m going to have to heal the blisters on her feet once we’re back at the catacombs. I resist the urge to reply that she’s going to have to do the same for me.
“Now comes the tricky part,” Arryn says, turning to face us. “There’s a door here that opens back into Lengard, right near the elevator we’ll be taking up to the surface. But after that …”
This is where we have to figure out how to get Ward and the breakout back to the zoo without anyone seeing them. An impossible task, given that they’re floating in front of us.
“I have an idea,” I say, chewing my cheek. “But you may not like it.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Thankfully, the whitewashed corridor that we step into is empty. Wherever our pursuers are, they’re nowhere near our escape elevator. I wonder if we have Enzo to thank for that— again.
The five of us cram inside the lift, and once it starts moving swiftly upward, I lower our unconscious companions to the ground and release them from my power, swaying slightly when a wave of light-headedness hits me.
“Explain one more time?” Cami says as she braces a hand on the wall, grimacing from our quick ascent.
“I’m pretty sure I can cloak us all,” I say, sharing the plan that was swirling around my mind during our walk through the dark tunnels. “Like Sneak or Jet—or somewhere in between. Make us invisible to outside eyes. Similar to what Pandora did last night with her infused scarf.”
