I flatten myself against the wall, searching for a place to hide. There’s nothing—I’m in a long stretch of hallway, the nearest bend the one up ahead, where the sound is coming from. Behind me, there are no doors, no corners, just a straight corridor.
My heart begins thundering in my ears as I prepare myself to Speak whoever approaches into unconsciousness. My pulse is so loud that I almost miss the sound of quick breathing, the sound of something heavy being dragged along the ground.
I look down to see the compass needle spinning in a circle just as a figure rounds the bend—no, two figures.
The breath I release is shaky, relief making me dizzy at the sight of Arryn heaving the limp weight of the breakout Speaker behind her. He’s still in the same clothes as last night, minus his shoes, which have been taken from him, as per Lengard’s initiation protocols.
Arryn seems just as surprised—and relieved—to see me as I am her.
“I was just coming to find you,” I tell her, hurrying forward. As with Ward, I quickly Speak the “hover” command and the breakout rises into the air. Arryn groans quietly and shakes out her hands, indicating that she’s been hauling him for some time.
“There was a complication,” she says, gesturing to the boy—specifically, to his neck, where I can see a small puncture wound encircled by already bruising flesh. “He’s been injected with something—some kind of sedative. He was unconscious when I found him. I had to drag him all the way here.”
Given that he’s roughly the size of Ward, I can see why such a task would have been difficult for her. Cami and I struggled and there were two of us. If not for my ability, we’d probably still be up near Vanik’s lab right now.
I can’t contain my shudder when I think of my own puncture wound. Even though there’s no trace of it left on my flesh, I still don’t know what was injected into me. All I know is that it can’t have been the same sedative as the breakout received, otherwise I’d be unconscious like him right now.
“Why do you think he was—”
I don’t get to finish asking why they might have knocked him out, because an alarm starts shrieking all around us. A loud, obnoxious sound that can only mean one thing.
I share a panicked look with Arryn. “They know we’re here.”
She shoves the hovering breakout forward. “We have to go. Now.”
I don’t need to be told twice.
