- Don't miss out!
Deciding she needed to find the answers to all her questions, she knew she couldn't possibly sit still in a strange room with a portion of her memory gone.
She staggered to her shaky feet, her vision blurring slightly as her fingers curled around the bedpost to keep her from falling to the wooden floors. Standing motionless for several seconds until the room stopped spinning before her eyes, she gently released her grip on the bed and forced one foot after the other forward until she was standing before the firmly closed door.
The possibility of finding the door locked left her standing before it for several seconds, trembling as her fingers settled on the knob. Pulling her eyelids shut, she breathed a prayer as she twisted the knob, a loud sigh of relief immediately drifting from her lips as the door gave way before her. The sound of the child’s cries seemed to worsen as the door swung open.
Poking her head out of the door, she stepped into the darkness, her vision readjusting to it enough to make out the walls of the narrow hallway. She followed the sound of the crying child down the hall until she was standing before a firmly closed door at the end of it.
Leaning forward nervously, she pressed her ear to the door, her mind scrambling to come up with what was supposed to be her next line of action. It would seem that going into the room was the best bet at finding out where she was, but fear seemed to keep her glued to her position by the door. For all she knew, she was in the home of a man of ill repute. He might have kidnapped her and perhaps sought to harm her?
Shaking her head, she stepped back from the door —this did not seem like the sort of wealth that a man with a terrible reputation could possess. Perhaps if she had woken up in a tiny building, tied to a bed... Perhaps then she would be terrified. It also made a little sense that if the last thing she remembered was being knocked to the ground in front of Sue's shop, it was possible she might have fainted and that the owner of this beautiful building had been kind enough to take her in.
Hoping with all her heart that she wasn't about to walk into the room of a monster, she reached forward and turned the knob.
The door gave way before her to a dimly lit room, her gaze immediately settling on the back of a strange man standing before what appeared to be a crib, his head bowed over something she couldn't quite see.
Slowly, her gaze ran down the length of his over six foot form —from his raven curls, to his rumpled white shirt that hung loosely on his body, to his black pants— before moving back to his head in time to watch him turn around swiftly, his gaze immediately locking with hers.
