“So, how was your weekend?” Talk about a loaded question. Some things were just too complicated to explain when you only had a few.
“Things have been kinda crazy. I’ve had some stuff to deal with. I think it’s going to work out, though. I hope so.”
“Good, because I want to see you this weekend.”
My heart fluttered. “But? I thought …” My voice sounded breathless. One look in those eyes of his and I felt exactly like I had the first time I’d looked into them. Excited and nervous. Scared and happy. And I felt a click inside of me. All these days I’d felt incomplete, this is what was missing. A path. My path. The one I’d lost sight of when I thought I needed to have Kori there to lead me. The one that included cute guys with green eyes and irresistibly spiky lashes.
Oh, yeah. I was so into him. Such a loser for letting him go. No, not letting—I pushed. Lexi was right, I wasn’t afraid of being alone, I was afraid of opening myself up. I lifted my eyes to his and let him see everything. “I thought you didn’t want to see me again.”
“I don’t know.” He gave a small laugh. “I felt … jealous and used. But, Ser, I wouldn’t forgive myself if I let one bad thing weigh more than all the good.”
“We haven’t had much good either,” I whispered. I looked at his face, his soft lips. Regretted again the drunken hookup at the park and wishing like hell for a clean slate and a real first kiss.
He tilted his forehead, tapping it against mine. “We have potential for mad amounts of good. That’s got to count for something. We can trade on our future,” he said with a curvy grin. Then, more serious: “Your friend Lexi told me if I didn’t give you a second chance, I’d be making the biggest mistake of my life.”
“She told you that? Lexi?”
“Yeah. She also said if I hurt you, she’d make sure I regretted it. She’s kind of scary.”
“Lexi?” I said with a laugh. “Scary?”
Anthony reached out and brushed his fingers over my lips. There wasn’t anything to wipe off this time. “It didn’t help that my watch smelled just like you. I kept bringing it to my face and all I wanted was the real thing.”
The air in the car suddenly got very thick and still. I searched his eyes and let my heart take a leap. We traded silly smiles, my eyes sneaking peeks at his lips. His seemed to graze along the curve of my neck.
“If I took you to the landfill, what would you do?” I asked.
