  45. AUTHOR’S NOTES

“I believe there has been an attempt to open a school.” His tone held a great deal of discomfort over the scheme.

She decided not to pursue the topic of his possible schools and instead tell him about her latest venture. “We are now discussing other training programs and more advanced schools for those who wish to attend university.”

Lord Montagu’s dark brows came together as he gave her a curious look. “Who would attend the advanced schools?”

“Anyone with the interest and ability to do the work.” They raised their arms for the next twirl, and she was distracted by his breath softly brushing her neck. “The only difficulty of which I can think is with the parents. Some of them do not understand how important an education is, even a basic education.”

Eleanor surreptitiously studied him in order to gauge his reaction. If he was to be eligible for her, he had to be interested in helping others. Unfortunately, the lull in their conversation only served to remind her how heavy his hand felt on her waist. As if it would leave a permanent brand, and how firm his back was under her palm. Her older sisters had mentioned sensations. And she wondered if these were the sensations they meant. She gave herself an inner shake. Surely it was much too soon.

His eyes widened, as if he realized what she was thinking. “You have given me a great deal to consider.”

But was that good or bad? “I have always found engaging with the charities to be rewarding.”

“I can see how that can be.” They lifted their arms for another twirl.

This discussion was frustrating. Eleanor wanted to be able to help him plan his charitable programs. Someone must. Why should it not be her? She disliked inaction when action was clearly required. Still, she supposed that not a lot could be done during a waltz. At least she had given him some ideas. Aside from that, the dance was ending, and she still had not discovered what she wanted to about him. Was he unable to work things out for himself, or was he merely adhering to the ton’s form of politeness when speaking with an unmarried lady? Eleanor completely understood Augusta’s aggravation with gentlemen.

Lord Montagu brought them to a halt and bowed. “My lady, I can safely say I have never enjoyed a dance so much. I feel as if I have had nothing more substantial than a feather in my arms.”

In his arms.

Heat rose into Eleanor’s neck and cheeks as she curtseyed. “I greatly enjoyed it as well, my lord.” Knowing the tingling she would probably feel, she lightly placed her hand on his arm. “Thank you for arranging to waltz with me.”

“It was my pleasure.” They strolled to where Matt and Grace stood chatting with the others in their group who had not danced. “Why do you depart after supper?”
