- AUTHOR’S NOTES
It only took a matter of a few minutes for the rest of the stable staff to be made known to her. Afterward, they toured the stable and attached carriage house. “As you see, there is enough room for more horses and carriages.”
“It is quite large.” She looked at Fitch. “And very well maintained. I am confident my horse and groom will be very happy here.”
He nodded. “We’ll be happy to meet them both, my lady.”
“Tomorrow, I had planned to bring my dresser and footman to meet the household staff. If you do not mind, I will bring my groom as well.”
“We’ll make him feel right at home,” Fitch said.
“My love.” John took her hand. “We must be going if you are going to see the garden before Mrs. Rollins arrives.”
“Yes, of course.” She smiled at Fitch, who appeared almost starstruck. “It was delightful meeting you. I am not a stranger to the stables.”
“You’re welcome anytime, my lady.” Fitch beamed.
They strolled across the alley and John opened the gate. “You have a devoted follower.”
“I am just someone new.” The corners of her lips rose. “In no time at all he will be treating me as if he taught me to ride my first pony.”
“That is certainly how he treats my sister and me. Of course, he did teach us how to ride.”
“It does form a special bond.” She laughed. “And an ingrained feeling they can treat one like a child anytime they please.” Eleanor stopped and surveyed the garden. “This is beautiful. I love how natural the flower beds are, and how the trees on the shared wall give one privacy.” She turned around. “That path looks like it is part of a woodland walk. Where does it lead?”
“A rose arbor and a small fountain.” He hadn’t been there in years, but John had a feeling that would soon change. “There is a bench as well. Is there anything you would like to change?”
“No.” She took his hand again. “I like it a great deal.”
A few minutes later they met with Mrs. Rollins. She was a cheery woman with light brown hair pulled into a low knot. “Lady Eleanor, I have not seen you since you were much younger.”
“It is good to see you again.” They shook hands. “I am so glad you were able to see the house so quickly.”
She immediately set about making notes and sketches of the rooms he and Eleanor showed her. They entered the morning room and she cringed. “All new wall coverings and hangings, I take it.”
Eleanor nodded. “Some of the furniture may remain, but most of it will need to be recovered.”
“I quite agree.” Mrs. Rollins glanced at him. “I’m sorry, my lord, but it looks as if the whole house was done up for mourning.”
