- AUTHOR’S NOTES
Once everyone had their cups of tea, she moved the employment contract from the side of the desk to the middle. “I chose to interview you for the position of mine manager because of your experience in mining, but also because of your interest in the welfare of the miners and their families.” His eyes widened as if he was surprised. “I would like to develop the mine as a model. Much like Holkham Hall has been made into an experimental or model farm.” He nodded. “Therefore, I wish to work with you in developing the best procedures for operating a mine and the best ways to support the families.” She waited for him to speak, but he only nodded. Eleanor hoped he agreed with her. “I have some ideas, such as no child labor. They should attend school. And different working conditions for women.” She smiled at him. “Please tell me your ideas.”
He set his untouched teacup on the desk. “Me lady, you have good ideas. Safety is also important. There are shafts that need to be framed so the dirt don’t bury the folks workin’ below. We need pay that can’t be taken away. And we need that our daughters and wives aren’t . . . aren’t”—he was clearly uncomfortable—“well, they just need to be left alone.”
Eleanor bit the inside of her lip. Someone was molesting the females. That could not stand. “If you will tell me who has been harming the girls and women, I will have them removed immediately.”
Mr. Russon’s jaw dropped, but he quickly recovered. “It’s Dobbins and his guards.”
Dobbins? The blackguard is working at my mine?
Her jaw clenched as she glanced at Edman. “Immediately, Mr. Russon.”
“Yes, me lady.”
Looking back at Mr. Russon, she gave him an encouraging smile. “Please continue.”
For the next hour they discussed living conditions and mine safety, as well as the futures of the children. Edman took notes as they spoke.
Finally, it appeared they had exhausted the subject, at least for now. “Is there anything else you would like to say?”
“Expect trouble, me lady.” The lines around Mr. Russon’s mouth deepened. “Once it gets out, other operators aren’t going to like it. They make a lot of money the way they are.”
She inclined her head. “I am aware of the risk and have hired several former soldiers to guard the mine. You need not be afraid they will threaten you, your miners, or the women and children.” Eleanor paused for a moment. “If any of them misbehave, send word directly to Mr. Edman. We will take care of the problem.” She looked at the men. “Is there anything else we must discuss?”
