That ruined his growing erection. Just as well. He didn’t want to advertise his intentions to the world. “I was just trying to work out a time Worthington would be available. I plan to ask Eleanor to marry me at the Exeter ball.”

“Normally, I would suggest her house, but with the number of people living there, you might not have a chance to be alone with her.”

Aurelia had no idea. John could imagine Elizabeth or one of the Danes popping into the parlor he was in with Eleanor to see what was going on. The garden would be worse. Lady Exeter’s ball would be the place. He wondered how long they would have to wait to wed. From what he had heard, her sisters had not had long betrothals. Would Eleanor want a short engagement?

“Of course there are also the settlement agreements to be worked out.” His sister blew out an exasperated breath. “Marc and I would have been married within a day or two of returning to Town if it had not been for them.”

John had not been directly involved in his sister’s marriage contract, but he did seem to recall their mother had dithered. “I don’t understand why it took so long.”

“Mama and the solicitor tried to keep me out of the negotiations. And the agreement they decided upon did not suit me at all. Finally Marc and I worked it out ourselves. I was amazed at how like-minded we were.”

John couldn’t see Worthington allowing John and Eleanor to draft their own agreements. She was a minor, where his sister had already reached her majority. Then again, the man had some experience. Four of his charges had already married. Worthington probably had a good idea of what he wanted in the contract.

“I do not think Worthington is one to shilly-shally.”

Aurelia glanced at the man in question, who was standing just out of hearing range. “I agree. He will be quite firm.”

Lytton strolled up and handed her a glass of champagne. “Thank you, my love.”

“It was my pleasure.” They gazed at each other for a long minute.

“Well, then.” She took a sip of wine. “We are going to mingle. Please tell me if you require assistance with anything.”

John watched them amble off, and his mind strayed back to Eleanor and closed coaches and beds.

The next thing he knew, a delicate hand touched his sleeve. Eleanor. “You look to be lost in thought.”

Very pleasant thoughts. He smiled at her. “A bit. Are you enjoying your ball?”

“I am.” She returned the smile. “Who are you standing up with other than me?”

“No one.” He cleared his throat. It was time to let her know he was serious. “There is no one else with whom I wish to dance.”

“No one?” Her voice was low and breathy. If only he could be alone with her.
