“I agree.” Actually, John didn’t see the point in them. His parents rubbed along extremely well, and theirs had been an arranged match. “My sister didn’t care to have one, but they seem to get on well enough.” Although she had chosen Lytton. John knew how his friend felt about money. He’d been on a strict allowance. Yet, the restraint he’d learned had served him well. When he’d had to take over the marquisate, he knew how to manage his money and take care of his holdings. Too many peers and other aristocrats wasted what they had. “Did you say your parents were in Town?”

“They arrive tomorrow.” Giff had a heavy frown on his face. “Your mother and sister?”

“Got here yesterday. M’sister’s at her town house, but Mama is staying with me.”

“That will be helpful. If you decide you do like a lady, she will be able to arrange a party for the theater or some other event.” His tone became a little lighter.

“I hadn’t thought of that, but you’re right.” John just hoped that neither his mother nor sister would interrogate his prospective wife, whoever she might be. He was sure they wouldn’t like the lady. She would be the opposite of them.

“They can also tell you which events to attend,” Giff added thoughtfully. “I don’t have a clue which entertainments have the most eligible ladies.”

That was also true. John didn’t either. “In that case, I will rely on her.” Mama would be thrilled to hear him admit he required her assistance. “As long as she doesn’t try to matchmake.”

Giff pulled a face. “I’m not sure mothers know how not to matchmake. Mine certainly doesn’t.”

“This is going to be a long few months.” The sooner John found a wife, the better. He turned his horse back to the gate. “I’m hungry. Would you like to break your fast with me? I’ve instructed my cook I shall eat early, even in Town.”

“Thank you.” Giff brought his gray gelding up beside John. “There won’t be anything but toast to eat at my house for another two hours.”

John had been lucky that his father enjoyed an early morning ride before breaking his fast. His mother usually had breakfast served in her parlor. He hadn’t decided where he’d like his wife to break her fast. Though he’d wager that the three ladies who were out here this early didn’t wait another two hours to eat. “In that case, you’re welcome to take your potluck with me anytime you wish.”

“Thank you.” His friend smiled with relief. “I’ll take you up on your offer.”
