- AUTHOR’S NOTES
Why had she not seen them at the Park? “When did it arrive?”
“About ten past five.” The maid glanced at Alice’s dressing room door. “If you’ll excuse me, I have to finish some work.”
“Yes, of course. I am sorry to have held you up.” Well, drat. Just when Eleanor had something important to tell them. She did not want to pace the parlor for however long it took them to come home, but she was too excited to do nothing. Perhaps Matt had received an answer from Uncle Herndon. She went back downstairs to his study and knocked on the door.
“Come.”
She strode in. “What did Uncle have to say?”
Matt glanced up and smiled smugly. “It took some convincing, but Charlie and I managed to bring him around.”
Eleanor sank into one of the chairs in front of the desk. “I take it there will be stipulations.”
“Not many. In fact, only two. You must consult us along the way and not”—he cocked a brow—“visit the mine without us.”
“That is fair.” She raised a brow of her own. It was truly amazing how much a raised brow could convey. “I am aware of how dangerous mines can be. And I really cannot travel all that way without a chaperone.”
“It’s not just the area, Eleanor. Those managing the mines have been known to become violent.”
“I am aware of that as well. I understand they have—people—who make sure their orders are obeyed.” She wondered if that was who was after the Johnson family. “I agree to the terms. When will he send over the contract?”
“There is something else. Your mine will be not only a model but has the potential to upset those who do not want change.”
The incident with the man at the inn looking for Mrs. Johnson and her children came to mind. “Could I be in physical danger?”
“I wish I could tell you.” Lines creased Matt’s forehead. “Once you are able to institute your ideas, you must take care. I”—his lips formed a thin line—“as a matter of fact, I don’t want your name involved. But I don’t know if that is possible.”
She knew that other members of her family had crossed those who did not like their actions on behalf of others, and the rogues had attempted to harm them. Even though she was never alone when she left the house, Eleanor knew she would have to be more aware of her surroundings. She nodded. “I understand. Now, about the contract?”
Matt’s countenance cleared. “Herndon will have his solicitor send the document to my solicitor, who will, in turn, bring it to us.”
