- AUTHOR’S NOTES
“She must be if she is in my room.” Duke and Daisy had frequently been found in Eleanor, Alice, and Madeline’s chambers. But Zeus and Posy spent the vast majority of their time with the younger children. Then again, Eleanor and her sisters had been younger back then. “We should let her sleep.”
“Yes.” Elizabeth nodded seriously. “She must be tired. Edward and Gaia wanted to play in the middle of the night.”
What had got into the two of them? They usually slept well. “Did the rain wake them up?”
“I do not know,” Elizabeth said. “Nurse sent their nursemaids to bed this morning after hearing about it.”
“Come.” Eleanor held out her hand. “We shall go down to breakfast.”
Her niece placed her tiny hand in hers. “Everyone is very busy here.”
Elizabeth had only been two when Augusta came out and would not have remembered what a Season could be like. “Yes, we are. It is because Alice, Madeline, and I are making our come outs.”
“I know,” Elizabeth said in a serious tone. “Constance, Alexandra, Vivienne, and I have decided we will not make come outs. We would have to stay up too late.”
Resolved not to laugh, Eleanor pressed her lips together. “That will make your papas very happy.”
“Yes.” Elizabeth nodded. “They like it when we go to bed on time.” With that settled, she skipped along beside Eleanor as they made their way to the breakfast room.
She remembered how sad Grace had been at the thought of never marrying and having her own children, and Eleanor knew she wanted marriage and children as well. But why did she have to have those feelings when Montagu touched her? The only thing to do was to make sure her plan to discover if he was intelligent bore fruit.
They reached the hall as Charlie, Augusta, and Phinn entered. All of them wore the waterproof coats they had gotten while traveling and boots.
“It is wet out there.” Augusta handed a wide-brimmed hat to a footman. “Thank goodness we have the clothing for it.”
“This reminds me of that deluge we were caught in in the Pyrénées.” Phinn shrugged off his coat.
“When we went to visit the village that had some sort of old language Augusta had to learn.” Charlie sat down and took the covering off his boots, then glanced at Eleanor and Elizabeth. “Never go traveling with Augusta. She will take you on journeys to the most remote places.”
“Admit it,” Augusta said. “You had much more fun with us than with that group you were with before.”
“I definitely became fitter,” Charlie retorted. “Ellie, let’s speak now. Thorton said no one else is down yet.”
Augusta held out her hand to Elizabeth. “Let’s find some toast and tea, shall we?”
“What are the Pyrénées?” She took Augusta’s hand.
