“No. He followed you here.” Harper sighed and finally reached for her coffee cup. “I just don’t know what to do about it.”
“Do you think we should go in?”
“I don’t know. He’s getting his information from somewhere.” She rubbed her head. “I don’t know what to do anymore.” She glanced to the door. “There’s Reid.”
Detective Springer came inside, yawning. There were only three other tables occupied, and he smiled when he spotted them.
“You look an awful lot like Danielle Stevens,” he said with a wink. “Do you get that often?” His smile faded when neither she nor Harper returned it. He slid into the booth opposite them. “What’s going on?”
“Our guy showed up again.”
“At the safe house? No way.”
“He got inside. Left a balloon for us. Left another damn doll inside the car.” Harper cleared her throat. “The unit out front, it got pulled off. We were there alone, without backup. And he got inside the goddamn house while we were sleeping.”
“Jesus Christ,” he whispered. “Who pulled the backup?”
“I don’t know. I called Mize,” Harper said. “He wanted us to come in, but we were being followed. I tried to lose him but…it was more like he gave up the chase. That’s when I called you.”
“Jesus…Harper, what’s going on here?” Detective Springer murmured. “I can’t believe he was inside the house.”
“I know. There’s got to be a leak, Reid. How else could he know where we were? And he’s as slippery as a damn ghost. The house had deadbolts, locked from the inside. When I checked everything, all was still secured, yet there was a damn balloon tied to a chair in the living room.” Harper leaned on her elbow, running her fingers through her hair several times. “I don’t know what to do, Reid. He’s escalating everything. Raped a woman, for whatever reason. And while we were sleeping, he was in the goddamn house with us.”
Dani could tell how tense Harper was, and she leaned closer, letting her shoulder touch hers. Harper pressed against her too and took a deep breath.
“So what do you want to do?” he asked.
“Mize said to go in. He was on his way.”
“But you’re afraid to go in?”
“Hell, we don’t know who this guy is. The only description we have of him is a creepy clown face. He could walk right into our squad room and we wouldn’t know it.”
“I still think that’s the safest place for you two to be.” He leaned closer. “It’s like he’s playing mind games. The dolls. The balloon. Hell, he was in the house with you. He could have—”
