Harper’s muddled brain tried to protest. No! It was Dani who needed her, not the other way around. Wasn’t it? But she had no willpower to stop Dani as soft hands removed the underwear she’d slipped on only moments earlier. The feeble attempt she made to take control, to roll them over, was met with firm resistance as Dani settled her weight on top of her. A warm, wet mouth covered her breast, a tongue stroked her nipple, and Harper closed her eyes, resigning herself to give whatever Dani wanted…whatever she needed.
It didn’t take long for her to know Dani’s intent as she kissed her way down Harper’s body, a persistent mouth nibbling on her skin, eliciting moans that Harper couldn’t contain. Knowing hands spread her thighs, and Harper felt a chill run up and down her heated body. She wanted to tell Dani to hurry. But no. Not hurry. Take her time. Take all night, if she wanted.

Dani’s hips rose up when Harper entered her. Her arms were wrapped around Harper’s head, holding her at her breast. She could feel how wet she was, could feel Harper’s wetness, too, as it coated her thigh. She groaned as Harper’s fingers plunged inside, her hips rolling against Dani’s as she sunk deeper, filling her.
Tiny gasps—moans—filled the room as their bodies slapped together, a little harder now, a little faster. Dani kept pace, her breathing labored, her hands finally releasing Harper’s head, only to clutch at the sheets when Harper moved to her other nipple, her tongue swirling around it almost frantically.
“God…Harper,” she whispered.
She was exhausted. They both were. Yet they couldn’t seem to stop. Not after the second time. Not even after the third. They hadn’t spoken…not with words, anyway. Dani didn’t need words. This was their goodbye. She knew it. Harper knew it. They were saying goodbye with their hands, their lips…their mouths.
And it would never be enough.
Chapter Fifty
Harper had taken two days. Mize had told her it would take that long to sort everything out. She had taken two days. Dani hadn’t even taken one. Despite her offer to drive her there, Dani had opted for a cab ride to the airport. It all seemed a little dreamlike now…now that it was over with.
Their last kiss had been bittersweet. They were just inside Harper’s front door. The taxi had already honked twice. Harper hadn’t known what to say. Dani, too, seemed at a loss for words. Yet when she walked away, she turned back, their eyes holding.
“I’m going to miss you. You made me feel alive, Scout. I’m going to miss that.”
