She stood up. “Working on it.”
“Working on it?”
“You said before that this guy was a professional. I think he is. He’s done this before. Sorrell wasn’t his first kill.”
“And you think you can take him down?”
She and Dani exchanged glances and Harper nodded. “I’ve got to.”
“Okay, Harper. I’ll go with you on this, but I don’t like it.”
“Fair enough.”
He nodded, then turned a circle, looking around the room. “Nice place. What did this set you back?”
Harper smiled. “Don’t have a clue. I let Danielle Stevens pay for it.”
Reid laughed, then opened the minibar, snooping inside. “I notice there’s a bottle missing.”
“Yeah, that little bottle probably cost her fifty bucks.”
Dani smiled at her. “And you didn’t even share it with me.”
His gaze drifted around the room again, finally landing on the unmade bed…the only bed in the room. He looked at her and raised an eyebrow. She met his gaze, then grinned teasingly. He rolled his eyes.
“As if,” he mouthed to her.
Harper met Dani’s amused expression and gave her a subtle wink.
Chapter Forty-One
“This is a stupid idea. It’s never going to work.”
“You’ve said that. I don’t know why. He’s following the locket.”
“You do look kinda cute as a blonde. I’m not crazy about the long hair, though.”
“Shut up,” she said as she adjusted the wig.
Reid laughed. “You look like you’re in drag.”
She turned and glared at him. “Seriously…shut up.”
“I can’t believe you’re trusting me with her. You’ve been kinda possessive with Danielle.”
“I know. And if anything happens to her, I’ll shoot you myself.”
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’ve got a little bit of a crush happening here, Harper.”
A crush? Harper wanted to tell him that what happened last night was way more than a crush, but she wasn’t certain Reid could handle that bit of information. Besides, Dani was still Danielle Stevens. What happened between them last night couldn’t ever get out.
“We’ve…kinda become friends,” she said instead.
“Look, I saw you last night in the car. I think that was a little more than you being friends.” He shrugged. “But hey, you falling for a straight chick—Danielle Stevens—nobody would blame you. Hell, if I was the one guarding her day and night…Jesus, I’d have already made a fool of myself. I mean, that woman is gorgeous. Even after all she’s been through, looking at her today, she’s like—”
“I get the picture.”
“Yeah. And like, you’re really sleeping in the same bed?”
“Really.”
“Man…I’m so jealous!”
