“Nothing,” she said quickly. Too quickly.

“Uh-huh.” Their gazes held and Dani didn’t dare look away. Harper finally conceded, giving her a quick nod. “Okay, then. Pack your things. I’m going down to see if I can pull their security footage.”

“Wait. Now? You’re going to leave me here alone?”

“Lock the door behind me. Don’t let anyone in. I’ll be right back.”

“Harper, no. I’m…I’m scared.”

Harper walked closer to her. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise. The door locks from the inside. Don’t let anyone in but me.”

Dani let out a shaky breath. “Okay.”

Before leaving, Harper looked under the bed, then opened up the wardrobe. Then she stepped into the bathroom. “All clear.” She came back out. “Pack your stuff. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

Dani nodded, then followed Harper to the door, locking it behind her. She turned and leaned against it, her eyes closed. How in the world was she going to tell Harper about the wig…about the bar? God, she knew she shouldn’t have gone that night. She knew it. And now she was going to have to explain it to someone. Explain it to a cop who was investigating her stalker. There would be a police file. The doll would be evidence. So would the note. And her confession? Would that be evidence too?

“Had to go to the damn bar,” she murmured.

Chapter Nine

“So he had a keycard?”

“Yes. He was dressed as if he worked there. Walked up to the door with a serving tray. I imagine that’s where the doll was hidden.”

“But he doesn’t work there?”

“He knew where the cameras were,” Harper said as she turned the corner. “There wasn’t a clean shot of his face, but they don’t think he works there.”

“He knew what room I was in. He had a keycard.” She raised her hands up. “How could he know?”

“When’s the last time he left something for you?”

Dani leaned back in the seat, trying to remember. Three days ago? Four? “He didn’t come inside. It was left at the door.” She glanced at Harper. “A doll. A little smaller than this one, with the hair cut off. It was three or four days ago. The day before I left.”

“Why does he cut the hair?”

“I’m not sure.”

Harper stopped as the traffic light changed from yellow to red. “So when are you going to tell me about the note?”

Dani looked over at her. “I…I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

Dani swallowed. “Both.”

Harper studied her and she wondered what she saw. Could she see through the lie?

“If you want me to help you, you’re going to have to trust me.”
