She nodded. She had known he was a professional of some sort, but she never would have guessed an agent. No wonder he seemed to always be one step ahead of them.
Reid was waiting for her when she walked out and he barely let the door close to Mize’s office before he was on her.
“Well? What did he say? How long? How long?”
“Two months.”
He smiled and nodded. “That’s good, though, right?”
She clapped his shoulder affectionately. “You free tonight?”
“Free? Yeah, sure. You want to get together?”
“I thought maybe I’d swing by. Crack that bottle of Crown you’ve been saving.”
He grinned. “Hell, yeah. I’ll spring for a pizza or something.”
“Great. See you tonight.”
Harper took the stairs down, pausing at the landing between the first and second floors. She pulled her phone out, staring at the text again. What did it mean? What did she want it to mean?
“Oh, Christ, Harper, get a grip.” She leaned against the wall, taking several deep breaths. What did she want it to mean? She was afraid to even go there. They’d spent one week together. One freaking week.
I miss her.
Chapter Fifty-One
Dani’s hand involuntarily went to her neck, but the locket wasn’t there. She didn’t realize how often she’d fidgeted with it. No wonder it was worn smooth.
“So what shall I tell her?”
She turned, staring blankly at Shelly. “I’m sorry. What?”
“You’ve been a million miles away ever since you got back. I said Pamela has been fielding questions from some of the tabloids. There are rumors swirling that you were seen at some dump of a motel in Claude, Texas—wherever that is—and that there was some police event or something. Do you want to respond?”
How could she respond? Did she really think her name could be kept out of it? “No. What else?”
Shelly looked at her notes. “The People interview. She’s rescheduled it for when you’re actually filming in Dallas. Three months. They’ll do it the second week of filming.”
“Fine.”
“I’ve also got a list of properties, like you requested. I can set up appointments whenever you’re ready.”
Did she still want to move? Now that the stalker was…was gone, was there any need to move? Especially since she’d be going on location in a few months. And after that…well, she was going somewhere. She just didn’t know where.
“You can cancel that, Shelly. I’ll stay here.”
“But what about the stalker? You think he gave up since you’ve been gone?”
“We’ll see how it goes,” she said evasively. “What else?”
Shelly set her iPad aside. “Are you okay? You’ve been…well, more indifferent than usual,” she said with a quick smile. “Like I said, a million miles away.”
