“Patti Jennings. She was quite thorough.”

Harper laughed. “You’re very bad, Ms. Stevens.” Then she winked. “Maybe I should have done one too.”

Dani laughed, but she sobered quickly. “But they found nothing, huh?”

“No. However he’s finding us, it’s not because of a tracking device.” Harper surprised her by turning into a grocery store parking lot. “So we don’t have a repeat of last night,” she explained.

“You’re going to let me go shopping with you, right?”

Harper reached into the backseat and brought out a dark blue baseball cap with DPD emblazoned on the front. “Sunglasses?”

“I have some, yes.”

“Don’t look at anyone, don’t smile. If you have to talk, use your Tennessee twang.”

She pulled her hair into a ponytail and secured it through the back of the cap, then turned to Harper and smiled. “How’s this?” she asked as she shoved sunglasses on.

“Don’t smile. You’re too pretty when you smile. And that cap can’t hide it.”

Try as she may, Dani couldn’t keep the grin from her face. Too pretty, huh? “Okay, I’ll try not to smile.” She made a face, giving a sideway, crooked grin and widening her eyes dramatically. “How’s that?”

Harper laughed. “Okay, that’ll work.”

“What are we shopping for? Will I get to cook?”

“I was thinking frozen dinners or something. Simple stuff.”

Dani got out and followed her to the door. “What did you do with the leftover pizza?”

“Gave it to Reid.” Harper held the door open for her. “But if you were going to cook something simple, that didn’t require a lot of stuff, what would it be?”

Dani paused. “What are you in the mood for?”

Harper grinned. “Mexican food.”

“Okay…so no. What else?”

“A good steak. Medium rare. Baked potato. Vegetable is optional.”

Dani laughed. “So we’re buying frozen dinners, I guess.”

“What about Hamburger Helper or something?”

“Gross. Really?”

“I’ve always been kinda fond of casseroles.”

“I grew up on casseroles,” she said as she pushed the cart down an aisle. “My grandmother had three or four that she rotated.”

“So let’s do a mini-casserole then. Pasta, cheese…some creamy stuff.”

“I guess we could do something. A pseudo stroganoff maybe. That wouldn’t be too hard.”

Harper nodded. “I’ll even help. I’m a great chopper.”

They got everything she needed to make a dish that at least resembled beef stroganoff, although she doubted once she added the shredded cheese—Harper’s insistence—that anyone would dare call it stroganoff. To be safe, Harper had also picked up a few frozen dinners…just in case. They also got a couple of frozen breakfast burritos and a bottle of orange juice.

When they got to the checkout, Dani offered to pay, handing over a credit card. Harper glanced at it and shook her head.

“Probably not a good idea.”
