Harper had no clue if this safe house was stocked with anything. If they were going to be there for several days, it wasn’t like they could call room service for meals. She wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of stopping at a grocery store for supplies. For one, she wasn’t really a very good cook. Besides, taking Dani into a store would most likely cause some commotion. Ordering delivery wasn’t an option either. She supposed she could get one of the patrol units to pick something up for them each day.
“What’s wrong? You’re frowning.”
She shook her head. “Nothing. Thinking about food.”
“Huh?”
“As in, what are we going to eat?” She looked in her rearview mirror, then made a sharp, quick turn to the right before speeding up. No one appeared to be following.
“Ah. In the movies, they always seem to have pizza boxes or Chinese food or something,” Dani said.
“Can’t allow a delivery to a safe house. I was thinking maybe we could have someone pick meals up for us. We’ll have two patrol units assigned.” She could feel Dani studying her.
“You’re having second thoughts, aren’t you?”
“About?”
“About sending me away when you had the chance.”
Harper glanced at her and smiled. “Are you kidding? Being toyed with by a stalker is so much fun. Can’t wait until we catch the bastard.”
“Only they don’t really want to catch him, do they?”
Harper sighed. Had she really thought Dani wouldn’t see through this so-called plan of theirs? “The number one priority is keeping you safe.”
“You mean until I leave here.”
“I don’t agree with their decision, Dani. They want to make sure nothing happens to you while you’re on our watch.”
“They don’t want any bad press.”
“Exactly.”
“But he raped somebody,” Dani said quietly. “Doesn’t that change the game?”
“Springer and Hernandez are working it.” She turned at the light, heading into a residential neighborhood. “Without DNA evidence, there’s not much of a case.” She shrugged. “Clown makeup and white gloves. Not much to go on.”
Dani shifted in her seat. “Do you think—if I had stayed home—that he would have escalated it this far?”
“What are you asking? Do I think he would have raped you?”
Dani nodded.
“I don’t know. Did his plans change once you got here? Did they change because we found his tracking device? There’s no way to know, Dani.”
“If he can’t find me now, do you think he’ll leave? Maybe go back and wait for me at home?”
