“To let us know that he knows where she is.” Mize shook his head. “So how’s he still tracking her?”
“The bulk of her luggage, we left here last night,” Harper said. “The one bag she did take with us, they’re checking it again now.”
“What about a purse? A wallet or something?”
“Yes, that too.”
“Harper thought—since he knows she’s the one assigned to Ms. Stevens—that he may have put a tracking device on her car last night. While it was here.”
Mize looked at her and she nodded. “They’re checking it too.” She shrugged. “It was just a thought.”
“And you’re sure you weren’t followed?”
“I’m sure. We got swallowed up in traffic. I ran red lights. No one followed us.”
“Maybe Reid is right then. Maybe our guy was watching the scene and followed Reid. If he’s watching everything, he knows that Reid is involved. Reid went to the hotel after the doll was found. Reid came to your place after your tires were slashed.”
“I think that’s a long shot,” she said. “If he’s tracking Danielle, then why would he hang out at the hotel after we left? For what purpose?”
“He didn’t have to follow her,” Mize reminded her. “He still had a tracking device on her luggage.”
“Still…why would he stay at the hotel?”
“Why does he wear clown makeup? Why does he do anything he does? I’m just suggesting that it’s a possibility that he took a chance that Reid is involved in this case and when he no longer had the tracking device, he followed Reid, hoping he would lead him to Ms. Stevens.”
“So he leaves a doll at the door on the off chance that she’s in his apartment?”
“He could have seen your car in my lot and assumed she was there,” Reid said. “Maybe he was watching us this morning when we left, just to verify that she was there.”
“To what end?” she asked. “He’s bound to know we’re not going to leave her alone now.”
Reid shrugged. “Maybe he’s just fucking with us.”
“Then why rape that woman?”
“We can conjecture all we want,” Lieutenant Mize said, interrupting them. “The why of it doesn’t matter. We need to find the guy. Reid, you and Hernandez work the rape like any other.”
“We talked to the neighbors last night. No witnesses. No one saw or heard anything.”
“What about security cameras in the parking lot?”
“Yeah, Hernandez was supposed to get them this morning. The feed is kept off-site.”
“Keep me posted on what you find.” He flicked his gaze to her. “I’ve got a buddy at the FBI. I called in a favor.”
She gave him a blank look. He wanted the FBI involved in this?
