“You remember Detective Springer,” she said, jerking a thumb at Reid. “He’s waiting for a ride. If you don’t mind, I thought we’d share our pizza with him.”

“I don’t mind at all.”

“There’s beer,” she said to Reid as she brought the pizza box to the table.

“Better not. I’m going to drop the knife off before I go home.”

Harper smiled when she opened the lid and found one slice missing. She glanced over at Dani, who smiled a bit sheepishly.

“Sorry. I was starving.”

“Yeah, me too.” Harper took out a slice before sliding the box toward Reid. “Found a note in the car.”

“Oh? He got inside? Was it locked?”

“Yeah. Talented little bastard.” She glanced at Reid. “Tell her what it said.”

“Are you sure?”

“You said yourself it was pretty lame.”

He nodded, then glanced at Dani. “It was a warning, Ms. Stevens. For Harper. He said that you…well, that you belong to him.”

“Show her the note,” she said around a mouthful. “Make sure it’s the same handwriting.”

Reid took the evidence bag from his inner jacket pocket and handed it to Dani. Harper watched her as she read it, her expression changing only subtly. Harper reached for another piece of pizza, waiting for her reaction.

“So he’s threatening you now.” Dani met her gaze. “I’m sorry. I—”

“It’s the same handwriting?”

“Yes.” Then she smiled. “‘Dyke cop,’ huh?”

Harper shrugged and returned her smile. “What can I say?”

Dani handed the evidence bag back to Reid. “I understand my rental car will be checked for a tracking device,” she said.

“Yes, tomorrow.” Reid took another piece too. “And something else. We think maybe…your luggage too.”

“My luggage?”

“He found my place somehow,” Harper said. “I wasn’t followed. I’m sure of it.”

Dani sat down at the table with them. “You think there’s a tracking device in my luggage too?”

“Possibility, yes,” she said.

“This is crazy. Who does stuff like this?”

“An obsessed fan, I guess,” she said. “Probably some guy like Reid who thinks—what did you say? ‘She’s the hottest thing out there’?”

Reid nearly choked on his pizza and his face turned bright red with embarrassment.

He kicked her leg under the table. “Must you?”

Harper laughed. “Sorry.”

Dani gave his arm a friendly pat. “Thank you for the compliment, but I can name several actresses who are hotter than I am. And younger,” she added.

The question was on Reid’s lips, but before he could ask it, a horn honked outside. There was a look of relief on his face at the sound.

“That’s my ride,” he said as he got up, taking his slice of pizza with him.

“Thanks for coming out,” she said. “We’ll hook up tomorrow.”

“Right.” He turned to Dani. “Good night, Ms. Stevens.”

“Good night, Detective.”
