“Because he’s in love with you and he finds out you’re gay?” Harper shook her head. “Just because you went to a gay bar doesn’t mean you’re gay. What was he doing there? Or was it a mixed bar?”
“No. I would assume he followed me.”
“Okay. I thought the stalking started after the bar. No?”
“No. I went to the bar…I don’t know, it was well over a month ago. But that’s when the notes that he left started to change tone. That’s when the fresh flowers that he’d leave changed to black roses. That’s when the dolls started showing up.”
Harper sat down again. “So he’s infatuated with you. He’s spying on you. Leaving you things. He’s in love.”
“Yes.”
“You go to a gay bar wearing a red wig, in disguise. He follows you. He’s…appalled by it. You’ve shattered his view of you.”
“Yes. He’s mad. He wants to punish me.”
“So…again…how did he know you were going to be in Dallas?” Harper tapped her finger on the table. “Maybe he’s got your house bugged. You flew here?”
“No. I drove.”
“You drove?”
“I needed some alone time. And I hate airports.”
“You hate airports or you hate the people at airports?”
She was surprised at how astute Harper was at reading her. “I don’t make a very good celebrity, do I?”
Harper tilted her head, studying her. “If you don’t like all the trimmings that go with it, why are you in the business?”
Dani’s smile was brief as she remembered that fateful day. “It just sort of happened. By accident. Literally.” She slid her empty glass over to Harper and nodded at her unasked question. Harper added a splash to the glass and slid it back to her. “After college, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I’d worked for a real estate company while I was in school and…well, I got a license because…well, men had a hard time saying no to me. It was fairly easy to sell houses.”
“And what? With your looks you got discovered?”
