The adobe siding and signature red roof of the La Quinta Inn was a far cry from the dingy motel they’d checked into eight hours earlier. A cobblestone driveway led them to a covered area by the double doors. Dani looked in at the brightly lit lobby. It hadn’t hit her yet that they were no longer on the run, that there was no longer a creepy clown chasing them.
“Perfect,” she said.
“I’m sure they have nicer ones in town,” he offered.
“Reid, this is fine,” Harper said. “We just need a place to get cleaned up and rest for a few hours.”
Harper was sitting in the backseat, having offered the front to her. It had been a fairly quiet drive to Amarillo with Reid trying to make conversation occasionally. Thankfully, it wasn’t much more than half an hour before they hit the lights of the city. The motel had been easy to find.
If the desk clerk thought it odd for them to be checking in at four thirty in the morning, she didn’t show it. There was, however, one awkward moment.
“If it’s okay with you,” Dani said to Harper, “I’d rather share a room. I’m still a little…shook up,” she said honestly. “No need to get four.” She held Harper’s gaze. “Unless…”
Before Harper could answer, Reid said, “You’re perfectly safe here. Mize said—”
“It’s fine with me,” Harper said. “Just three rooms.”
Reid looked between them, frowning slightly, but he finally shrugged. “Okay, whatever you say.”
The room was nice, spacious, and, most importantly, very clean. She would have rather had a room with a king bed, but she didn’t know how they would have explained that to Reid. She didn’t realize how tired she was until Harper closed the door and let out her own weary sigh.
“Why don’t you shower first,” she offered.
“No, you go ahead. I’ve got to rummage through my bag and see if I have anything that’s clean.”
Dani stared at her for a moment. Things seemed…well, different between them. Maybe she’d been presumptuous—or selfish—when she’d requested to share a room. Now that the threat was over…now that they were going to say goodbye…was there any need? Was it necessary to spend these last six or seven hours together? In bed?
God…she wasn’t ready to say goodbye.
“Dani?”
She blinked, not realizing that she was still staring. “Yes. I’ll shower.”
