“Yes. And it’s okay to have sex and to have fun and for there not to be any complications. We’re not dating, we’re not in a relationship, so there’s no involvement. Emotional, anyway.”
“Right. So, what’s troubling you?”
Abby met her gaze. “It makes me feel cheap. And dirty.”
“I see.”
“I mean, maybe that’s not exactly how I feel, because I really did enjoy it,” she said with a smile. “Maybe what I’m thinking is that I shouldn’t have enjoyed it so much. Does that make sense?”
“Shouldn’t have enjoyed it because it’s not something you normally do or shouldn’t have enjoyed it because it was part of the stipulation for me being here with you?”
“A little of both, I think.”
“Abby, we’re adults, we’re single. It’s not like we’re cheating on anyone. You don’t have to feel guilty for enjoying sex.”
“Yes! That’s it. I feel guilty.”
Nic smiled at her. “Guilty for liking it?”
“Yes.”
Nic moved closer to her. “You know what? How about you evaluate it all again in the morning?”
Abby met her gaze. “You mean after we have sex again?”
“Yes. Maybe tomorrow you won’t feel guilt or shame or whatever else you’re feeling.” She let her gaze drift to Abby’s mouth. “Would you believe me if I told you it was one of the best nights of my life?”
Abby shook her head.
“But it was. You know why? Because we both knew up front that there were no expectations. You weren’t someone who I was going to have to run away from and avoid after a date or two. I felt relaxed and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.” She took a step away from her. “But it’s not all about me, Abby. So, if you’re not comfortable with this arrangement, if it makes you feel dirty or cheap as you say, then I’ll respect that. We’ll play by your rules.”
“Really? But what about your compensation?”
“Well, I’ll have to get by with my memories from last night.” She turned back to the fire. “I like you. I certainly don’t want to force myself on you. It’s your call, Abby.”
“Wow. Simple as all that?” Abby moved closer to her. “I like you too. I thought you were arrogant and conceited, but now—”
“What?” she asked with mock indignation.
Abby laughed. “I did. But it was only an act, wasn’t it?”
She sighed. Was it? Yeah, she supposed it was. Abby surprised her by leaning closer and kissing her full on the mouth.
“Go shower. I’ll help Mom get started with dinner.”
She was about to comment when the front door opened. Holly was there with Aaron behind her. Holly’s cheeks were red and her hair disheveled.
“Oh, that fire looks heavenly.”
