By the time she slipped off her jeans and put on the sweats, Abby had two slices of pizza on each plate and had already taken a bite of one of hers. “Sorry, but my lunch was interrupted, and I didn’t even eat half of my sandwich.”
“That’s okay.” She sat down beside her and leaned back against the sofa. “I was hungry after my workout and didn’t feel like cooking.”
“You’re so dedicated to the gym. If I make three times a week, I’m proud of myself.”
“And this week?” she teased.
Abby leaned closer and bumped her shoulder. “Once.” Abby put her pizza down. “I had a visitor today. At lunch, thus my sandwich going uneaten.”
“Unexpected?”
“Quite. It was Holly.”
“Really? Maid of honor talk or—”
“If only it was that. But no.” Abby met her gaze. “She said she’d made a mistake. By ending things with me,” she clarified.
“I see.”
Abby pounded her fist against her thigh. “The goddamn nerve of her. Can you believe she came to my office with a proposal? She wanted us to start dating again. Good lord, can you imagine my mother’s reaction to that news?”
Nic sat back, eyes wide. “And…and are you?”
“What? No. Why would you think that?” She held her hand up. “You and I aren’t dating and I’m technically single, but Holly doesn’t know that. She expected she could just snap her fingers and I’d break up with you and fall back to her. I was so angry with her. The nerve!”
“Did you tell her?”
“Oh, she knew I was angry. I told her I was in love with you and that I finally knew what real love felt like.” Abby held her gaze. “And I told her it was so very much different than what I’d ever felt for her.” She picked up her pizza again. “Anyway, she came there saying that it wasn’t working with Aaron, that he didn’t get her juices flowing.” She laughed. “She actually said those words.”
“My god.”
“I know. After I turned her down, she asked me not to say anything to him. As if I was going to call him up and tattle on her.”
“So even though she’s not in love with him, she’s going to stay?”
“That was my assumption.”
“You don’t think you should warn him?”
“Warn him that he’s marrying a lesbian? Unless she’s a really good actress when they’re in bed, surely he knows. Maybe he doesn’t care. He’s thirty-four years old. Maybe he’s just ready to get married.”
“And kids?”
Abby shook her head. “I can’t see them having kids, can you? They’re both self-absorbed. They’re going to build the big-ass house. I don’t think kids are in their plans.”
