“Yeah, dance. You know how, don’t you?”
“I do, yeah.”
Abby smiled at her and took her hand. “So, let’s dance.”
Nic found herself being pulled onto the dance floor. She suddenly grew another left foot as she stood there stupidly. Abby’s smile was sweet and nearly melted her heart.
“We’re going to get run over if we don’t move, you know.”
Nic finally pulled Abby into her arms, and she did melt, just as she knew she would. She still didn’t move as Abby’s arms went around her shoulders and her body pressed close.
“God, I’ve missed you, Nic.”
Nic closed her eyes at the quiet words. All sorts of memories flooded her brain as Abby got them moving ever so slowly. They were in no way keeping pace with the song or the others who danced around them. She didn’t care.
“I missed you too,” she heard herself say.
Yes, surely, she was dreaming. There was no way Abby was in her arms again, no way they were dancing. But it felt real, didn’t it? Fingers at her neck, threading into her hair. Thighs brushing hers. It certainly felt real.
“This is my first time coming here in months. You?”
She nodded. “Yeah. I was thinking earlier that I hadn’t been here since last summer.” She pulled away enough to meet Abby’s eyes. “How was the doctor? Your date?”
Abby shook her head but didn’t say anything. She merely burrowed closer and Nic let her. One song turned into three, then four. She knew they weren’t really dancing. They were simply moving together, letting their bodies touch. What did it mean? What did Abby want? When an actual slow song came on, they stopped moving altogether. Abby’s mouth found hers, and Nic was embarrassed by the moan that left her lips.
They pulled apart as they got bumped from behind. Abby’s eyes were on fire and Nic just wanted to drown in them.
“Can we…can we get out of here? Please?” Abby asked almost shyly.
Nic didn’t pause to consider the question, didn’t take into account whether it was a good idea or not. She took Abby’s hand and led her out of the bar. Her mind was muddled, though, and she couldn’t remember where she’d parked. The street was lined with cars, and she looked up, and then down.
“What is it?”
Nic laughed lightly. “I don’t remember where I parked.”
Abby slipped her hand around Nic’s elbow, and they started walking. “The doctor was very nice. Attractive. We had two dates.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Uh huh. She called me yesterday. Wanted to have dinner. Like tonight. I said no.”
“Why?”
