Travis sucked his teeth and pulled his head to the side, obviously not agreeing with my last statement. ‘Well, it could be a match to another relative that you haven’t met yet, or one that isn’t in any of the ancestry databases. You only have part of your family tree at this point, there might be a hundred more distant relatives out there that could be the match. The chances of it being Cris seem small. I wouldn’t write off your uncle just yet. But, be careful, okay Lizzie? They wouldn’t talk to you if they didn’t feel strongly that the familial match meant something. And their antennas clearly went up when you mentioned Cris is a vet.’
‘Yeah, that was weird … I guess you’re right.’ I took a deep inhale, holding it for a long second before letting it escape with a loud puff. ‘I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and keep getting to know him. I would hate to cut off the only family I’ve found if it turns out he’s innocent, especially when they still have other people to look into.’
But I knew deep down I’d have to keep my guard up with Cris just in case. While Travis’s logic was correct and the chances of Cris being a murderer were slim, it was still a possibility.
‘Andie is going to be so mad she missed this,’ he said, running a hand through his thick wavy hair, clearly trying to lighten the mood.
I chuckled, knowing he was right. I tossed Hannigan’s business card on the table, sitting down on the couch. Grabbing my laptop, I popped it open and pulled up a Google search.
‘Getting back to work already?’ Travis asked, his eyebrows raised.
‘Oh no, not yet. I just want to take a look and see if I can find a list of active serial killers. Maybe narrow down the possibilities?’ I replied, looking at Travis with a shrug.
‘Good idea. I have a few minutes before I have to head back.’
After typing ‘active serial killers’ in the search bar, a number of results came up. As we scanned the page, I pointed to one list that seemed the most recent and clicked on it. I was able to cross many off the list by the fact that the murders were limited to one state, and from what the agents said, these murders were multi-state.
