I took a deep breath, looking down at the paltry list of three names, feeling like a failure for not having more to give them. Then I remembered another name I could add. ‘There was also Frank and Cris’s dad, Rodrigo, but he passed away a long time ago as well,’ I said and wrote his name down. ‘That’s all that I know about the Dominio side.’ I could feel my cheeks getting warmer, nervous about how little I knew.

Hannigan nodded, making a few notes in his notebook but not skipping a beat. ‘Would you mind if we hold on to that list for now? For reference?’

‘Oh, um, sure,’ I said, pushing the paper closer to him.

‘Thank you. So, how well do you know your grand uncle, Cristian Dominio? Have you spent a lot of time with him?’ Hannigan asked.

‘I wouldn’t say a lot,’ I replied, now getting uncomfortable with answering questions about the only piece of real family I knew. ‘I’ve met him in person once so far, and we’ve FaceTimed, but we’re planning another visit. I really want to learn more about my biological family and Cris and his wife are all I have right now. I’m still getting to know them and they seem open to getting to know me too.’ I paused, looking back and forth between the two agents. ‘But there’s no way you could really think it’s him, right? I mean, he’s married to the loveliest woman and he’s a vet who rescues and cares for sick animals. There’s no way someone with a heart like that could be a murderer. I’ve been to his house. He just doesn’t seem like he could hurt a fly.’

‘Did you say he’s a veterinarian?’ Beck said, giving a knowing look to her partner.

Their constant shared glances were making me suspect that there was something important they weren’t telling me. Hannigan scribbled a note and then flipped the page quickly to reveal a blank one, hiding it from my prying eyes.

‘Yeah, he has his own practice, has for years,’ I said, sharing my own confused look with Travis as yet another look passed between the agents.

‘Is that significant?’ Travis asked, making eye contact with Hannigan. We both seemed to assume he was the one who decided how much information could be shared.

‘We can’t say more right now,’ Hannigan said. He retrained his eyes on me. ‘Would you be willing to let us access your 23andMe results? I know you said that you don’t know anything about your father’s side yet, but it’s possible some of them are in your results as well. It would be a great help in identifying other potential matches if we can develop your family tree in more detail.’
