I wasn’t sure if we had ever been alone together without Andie around. Sometimes I worried that Travis and I were in a weird game of tug of war, vying for Andie’s time and attention. I didn’t want to come between them because I had to admit, Travis was a great match for Andie, who usually discarded men after only a few weeks of dating. None of them could ever keep up with her personality, until Travis. He had lasted way past the dreaded three week mark, and matched Andie barb for barb, making her happier than I had ever seen in her previous relationships. But today he was here on his own just to be a good friend to his girlfriend’s cousin, and I deeply appreciated it. I hoped that one day I’d find a boyfriend as kind and generous as him.

The loud buzzer pulled me quickly out of my reverie. Leaping from the couch, I speed walked over to the front door. Travis rose and followed in my wake at a slower pace. Surely, as a lawyer, he was much more comfortable around law enforcement than I was. Come to think of it, I’d never even spoken to a police officer, let alone someone from the FBI. I figured they were the punctual type, as the clock ticked over to the exact time Hannigan said they would arrive just as I pressed the button to let them in. A minute later, there was a crisp, purposeful knock on the door. Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I gripped the doorknob and pulled, my heart pounding in my ears. Why am I so nervous? It wasn’t like I’d personally broken any laws. But the anticipation of the conversation was making my palms sweat.

I came face to face with the two agents, one man and one woman, dressed alike in collared shirts with open tailored suit jackets and slacks. I envied how wrinkle free they appeared. These were two people who paid very close attention to detail, all the way from their impeccably styled hair and courteous smiles, down to the shine of their freshly polished shoes. I did a double take when my eyes fell upon the woman’s black patent leather heels, the telltale Louboutin red bottoms peeking out from the sides.

‘Hello, Elizabeth Catalano?’

My eyes snapped back up to the agents’ faces. ‘Yes, hi, you can call me Liz,’ I said, reaching out a hand after trying to discreetly wipe the sweat on my jeans.
