‘I can be here with you,’ Travis interrupted.

Both of us looked at him. ‘Really?’ I asked.

Andie swatted his arm. ‘Yeah, really? I was hoping she’d change the date.’

Travis frowned at Andie’s petulance. I stifled a laugh at his expression. Andie’s impulsive and sometimes childish behavior was something he’d openly and frequently said he both loved and disliked about her. He said the thing that had immediately drawn him to Andie was what a complicated woman she was because it kept him on his toes.

He looked at me, ignoring Andie’s pouting. ‘I can take a long lunch. He said on the phone that it shouldn’t take long. I’ve already wrapped up the paperwork on the Donnigal case, so barring any unforeseen issues, it shouldn’t be a problem for me to get away.’

‘Thanks Trav, you’re a lifesaver. Plus, it might be nice to have a lawyer here. Who knows what they’re going to ask me. I know I haven’t done anything wrong, but I have no idea what I should or shouldn’t say to someone from the FBI, or if I’ll even understand everything.’

Andie pounded her fist on the back of the couch. ‘I can’t believe I’m going to miss actual FBI agents sitting in my apartment talking about an actual FBI case. Can you like, secretly call me and leave your phone up on speaker? I can mute my end.’

I laughed and pulled Andie into a hug. ‘Girl, somehow I don’t think the FBI would take too kindly to that if I got caught, but you know I’ll give you a play by play when you get home.’ I held her at arms’ length. ‘And hey, why don’t I make Gram’s lasagna that night as a consolation. We’ll pig out and I’ll tell you all the gory details. Deal?’

Andie’s face morphed from sullen into a grin. ‘Deal.’

Although a lingering sadness still lurked in the pit of my stomach about the upheaval of my world, Andie’s contagious smile and obvious optimism that this would all turn out okay made me feel more at peace. For now, anyway. While I was both intrigued and nervous about meeting with the FBI, I was just a teensy bit grateful for the distraction the meeting offered.

Travis grabbed his phone and scrolled with a determined look on his face.

‘What are you doing?’ Andie asked.

‘Just clearing my schedule so I can make it for that dinner, too. No way I’m missing Gram’s lasagna,’ Travis replied.
