The bumpy road the navigation led me down after exiting the highway some ten miles back jostled me in my seat. From the directions on the screen, I should come upon the cabin soon. I felt sick the entire drive and I had gripped the steering wheel so hard I was sure when I prized my fingers away they would leave an imprint. I’d anxiously watched my rearview mirror the entire trip, certain Cris had followed me. At one point I was convinced I saw a car following me, taking all the same exits and turns that I did. But I’d since lost sight of it. I couldn’t tell if I was being cautious or paranoid but all I knew was that I had to get to the cabin. When I was forced to wait at a train crossing, I locked my car doors and texted Andie, letting her know that I’d come up to the cabin and was now certain the killer was Cris. I sent her the address of the cabin and told her if she didn’t hear back from me within an hour to call Hannigan and tell him where I’d gone. I felt better that someone knew where I was and that I had gotten out of Cris’s home safely. I was scared about what I might find at the cabin, but determined to find out the truth, once and for all.
I wondered if Hannigan and Beck knew about this cabin? It would be the perfect place for the killer to use since it was so remote, I thought as I scanned the untamed forest surrounding me. The sun had dipped down past the tree line but bright streaks filtered through the evergreens, casting long shadows. If they’d already discovered the cabin then my trip up here may be futile. But with this new piece of information, something told me I’d find the women at the cabin. If I was right, I had to save them before Cris got to them. Despite my new conviction, there was still a small part of me that was worried I was completely wrong. I didn’t want to waste the FBI’s time if I had totally missed the mark on this. If I found anything that might be helpful, I would call Hannigan and Beck immediately, I said to myself, trying to rationalize my reckless decision to drive all the way up here behind their backs. I just hoped my fears about Cris following me were unfounded.
‘Turn left,’ projected the voice from my phone.
