Travis ordered a round of beers while Andie and I racked up the balls on the faded green pool table. When Travis had suggested hot wings, beer and pool at our favorite local spot, The Royal Brooklyn, me and Andie had jumped at the idea. I needed to get out of the house to try to take my mind off all this serial killer business and the fact that Adam still hadn’t answered my calls, and Andie had finally finished a hellish week at work. We’d gorged ourselves on spicy buffalo wings, fish tacos and french fries, chasing them down with a round of Brooklyn Brewery Pilsners. The Beatles blared through the jukebox and various sports played silently on the many TVs positioned strategically throughout the bar. I hummed along absentmindedly to Don’t Let Me Down, swaying my hips to the beat. Andie squinted as she determinedly lined up her pool cue with the neat triangle of balls, getting ready to break. After she released her shot, her force a little too weak to send any balls soaring into the pockets, she swore under her breath and glanced up at me. I’d been fairly quiet through dinner, barely commenting on Andie’s story about the guy she’d dealt with at work that day who had so many piercings he’d spent twenty minutes carefully removing earrings from his nipples and genitalia before Andie could take his X-rays.
‘Still thinking about what the FBI agents told you?’ she said with a sigh.
I glanced up at her. ‘Yeah, sorry, I’m trying not to think about it but it keeps creeping back in, you know? The FBI made some pretty good points and I see why they’re looking at Cris. But you’ve met him, Andie. Sure, he’s a bit awkward but there’s no way he could be a serial killer, right?’
Andie came around to my side of the table, forcefully slamming the bottom of the pool cue into the ground, leaning on it like a staff and said, ‘Honestly? Yeah, he seemed nice. But I’m sure Ted Bundy seemed like a good guy too.’
I arched my eyebrows in surprise, sure that she would have been on my side. ‘So are you saying you think it could be him?’
Andie avoided my eyes, grabbing the blue chalk cube and rubbing it over the tip of her cue stick. ‘I’m not saying anything definitively. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? I don’t know, Liz. I don’t know him well enough.’ She sighed and looked back at me.
