I tensed up as the full reality of those words sunk in. Even if it wasn’t Cris, I could still walk unwittingly into the den of a monster if I continued my quest to know Adam.
‘And secondly,’ he continued, ‘Liz, while we want you to prioritize your safety and stay out of their paths as we investigate, please do let us know of any contact made. You’re in a unique position to observe truths about your biological family that may be hidden from us because of our badges.’
‘What exactly am I supposed to be looking for?’
‘We’re not asking you to do anything out of the ordinary,’ Hannigan continued. ‘We certainly don’t want you to put yourself in further danger, but we have formulated a profile of the killer using behavioral analysis. We aren’t able to divulge it all with you but you should note that both Cris and Adam fit the age range, 60–70, and have both lived near where victims have gone missing over the years. TSK would also be extremely intelligent and manipulative, especially towards young women. He’s so good at hiding in plain sight that you may not even realize you’re talking to a killer.’
I felt like I was on an episode of Criminal Minds but tried to force down the fascination and disbelief that this was really happening inside my living room, and instead focus on the words he was saying. This wasn’t a show, this was very real. And more importantly, the danger was real.
‘He also likely owns at least one remote additional property that allows him to hold the young women captive before killing them and dumping their bodies. If we can locate that property, it will likely hold extremely valuable evidence.’
While this didn’t concretely tie Cris to the crimes, my hesitation toward my uncle was growing, the seed they planted fighting to take root in my subconscious. Part of me, however, was determined to stand by the only biological family I knew.
‘Is that all? I haven’t heard Cris or Rosie talk about any other properties,’ I said, clearing my throat. Andie was sipping her drink, looking back and forth between me and the agents like she was watching a tennis match.
The agents rose from the couch at the same time so I stood as well. ‘Yes, well, that’s all we can tell you right now but please show caution concerning Cristian and Adam. And keep what we’ve shared of the killer’s profile in mind if you continue to be in contact. Something unexpected may jump out at you that could assist us in our investigation. You have my business card, yes?’
‘Yes, but I’m not sure I’ll have anything to report back,’ I said.
