  51. About the Publisher

He examines Lumin’s face, eyes filling with tears. When they go to their table, Lumin leans towards Amber. ‘That old guy recognises the lodge,’ she whispers as she looks over her shoulder at him. ‘I think he might recognise me too. We should interrogate him!’

Amber shakes her head. ‘Interrogate? What are we, Cagney and Lacey?’

‘Who?’

Amber laughs. ‘Doesn’t matter. Look, I know men like that, see them in the local pub. Their brains are so addled from the drink, you can’t get any sense out of them.’ They watch as the old man stands, swaying slightly before stumbling to the toilets.

‘That’s definitely the same mountain in your picture though,’ Amber says, turning back to Lumin. ‘Plus, with the waterfall being so close too, we’re definitely in the right place.’

‘But it’s weird the woman didn’t recognise the lodge. It’s pretty memorable from the size of it.’

‘The loch is one of the larger ones here. It’s feasible there’s a house hidden away on some private land.’

‘Maybe.’ But Lumin doesn’t look convinced and neither is Amber.

When their dinner is brought over, the portions are huge.

‘That old man,’ Lumin asks the woman as she serves them. ‘How long has he lived around here?’

‘All his life, I think,’ the girl replies. ‘My mum said he used to have money. But then he lost everything a few years ago. We only moved here recently so we don’t know his whole history. I think he has kids, he talks about them sometimes. But then he gets upset. It’s horrible seeing him cry. Anyway,’ she says with a sigh. ‘I try my best to look out for him, we all do. But sometimes I feel like he doesn’t want our help. That he’d be happier just being left alone. Right, tuck in. I’ll bring the pudding menu over when you’re finished.’

As they eat dinner, Lumin is unusually quiet. Amber thinks about how tough it must be for her. The rollercoaster ride of hope then disappointment. Had she made the right decision, bringing her out here? Surely it was better than being in that hospital? At least they were doing something, even if she was getting herself into trouble. Detective King had left another message, saying he was going to go to the press with her picture if she didn’t call him back soon. She just can’t face it though. They are so close to finding out where Lumin came from, Amber can feel it in her bones. She wants to wait until they have a breakthrough to prove she was right to come, before calling the detective.
