- About the Publisher
‘Jesus, Gwyneth, I told you not to take another night shift.’ Julia was staring down at me, arms crossed, lips pinched.
‘Shit,’ I mumbled, sitting up and wiping the dribble from my chin. ‘Did I fall asleep?’ I looked towards Duchess’s pup. ‘God, did I miss anything?’
‘No, luckily for you,’ Julia said. ‘Well, that’s if you don’t count your visitor.’
‘Visitor?’
She gestured behind her and for a moment, I thought it was Dylan standing there. Same dark hair, same chiselled features. But then I realised it wasn’t him at all: it was Cole.
Chapter Thirteen
I stood up on shaky legs, wiping the sleep from my eyes as I looked at Cole in surprise. Seeing him there, I realised just how similar the brothers were. Replace Cole’s blue eyes with brown, make his short hair longer, and it could have been Dylan standing there in front of me.
‘What are you doing here? I asked.
He rubbed at the back of his neck.‘We can’t find Dylan. He just upped and left. Mum thought he might come to see you here while you’re filming, it’s the kind of impulsive thing he’d do.’
‘Well, he isn’t here,’ I said, taking a sip of my coffee, grimacing when I realised how cold it was. ‘I haven’t seen him since last Christmas,’ I added. ‘Anyway, how on earth did you find me here?’
‘You told us you were going to Iceland to film. I called around, found out what production company you’re working with. The plan was to call you and see if you’d seen Dylan. I couldn’t get hold of you.’ He shrugged. ‘So what the hell, I thought I’d fly out. I’ve been meaning to catch up with a client we have out here anyway.’
‘Our satellite phone’s been playing up. Honestly, I don’t know why you’d assume he was here.’
Cole’s brow creased. ‘He was gutted when you left, Gwyneth.’
I tried not to show my emotions. ‘I left a note for him with my number, he could have tried to call.’
‘He didn’t mention that.’
‘It doesn’t matter,’ I said, trying to appear casual. ‘We only knew each other a few days anyway. I think your mum is overestimating what went on between me and Dylan.’
Cole shook his head. ‘No. That’s one thing she’s got right. We could all see it, the connection you both had.’
I felt my tummy tilt. There had been a connection. So why the hell hadn’t he got in touch?
‘When was the last time you saw him?’ I asked.
‘Two months ago.’
‘And nothing since? No calls?’
