Chapters (13)
Before she could fall asleep something crashed against the windshield. The glass cracked, like it had cracked before on the highway. Luca let out a scream, her mouth tasted like adrenaline.
She saw Robi in the field. He was standing in the snow, waving at her slowly; his face was obscured in the snowfall, but she would have recognized his posture anywhere. Robi took another stone and threw it towards the car; this time the stone struck the roof. Although Luca anticipated the sound, she still shuddered when the stone hit the metal.
Robi signaled to her again, then turned and walked towards the field.
The temperature had already dropped in the car. She could see her breath. Luca sighed heavily and got out. Her legs sank into the snow. She hissed at the wet cold, but headed after Robi to the field. Wolves and children howled in the distance.
There was a hole. A rectangular hole in the ground, two meters by two meters, in the middle of the snow-covered field. It seemed fresh, the dirt was still black. Somehow she knew it had been dug for her. There was no one else left in the area, perhaps not in the entire world; therefore this hole had to be waiting for her.
She looked down into the hole; Robi lay at the bottom, motionless, face down. He was waiting for her to join him.
All was silent, a supreme silence. The kind of silence that covers you and soothes, silence that gives you rest. She could even hear the sound of the snowflakes.
She climbed into the hole next to Robi and reached into his jeans pocket. She took out the wedding ring and looked at it again. It wasn’t ugly, but not particularly pretty either. A simple gold ring. Maybe even too tight for her finger.
It didn’t matter; she put the ring on her tongue and swallowed it. Over the edge of the hole she saw the gray sky; she knew they would soon be completely covered by snow.
She hugged Robi and waited for the cold to put her to sleep.

Short summary: I’m alive. Hooray.
Summary:
Everything you’ve heard or assumed about this trip is probably true. The challenges are of an inhuman scale – death or madness is a very real possibility.
