Her husband helped her into the back of the ambulance and she turned around, grimacing.

“Bay. Here are the keys.” She slapped the Residence Director’s keys into my hand.

“Don’t worry. I’ll handle everything. Don’t worry.”

She grimaced. Her husband yelped as she gripped his hand and froze just inside the ambulance. “Fuck, that hurt.” She let out a deep breath. “Thanks, Bay, I guess you were right. Or you jinxed me.” With a playful glare, she disappeared behind the closing doors.

I turned around, my heart finally dropping from my throat, and stood face-to-face with the man who had turned my life upside down.

He stood beside some of the team who’d arrived early, and the assistant coach, Hank. Our eyes locked. He’d be in my building for the next four weeks. The next four weeks in the building I now literally had the keys to.

I thought back to the last lines I’d written in the green notebook before I’d closed it for what I thought was forever.

Your love was gift wrapped in barbed wire, and I was stupid enough to believe I could open it without getting nicked. I don’t know if the wounds will ever heal. You shredded me, Darren Keyton.
