Next he goes to the bedroom, eyes searching once more. The lamp could work but lying in bed it would be at eye level. He tilts his head to look at the ceiling. There’s a smoke alarm. He could punch out the LED light and put the camera eye in its place. He brings the chair in from the lounge room, climbs up, unclips the smoke alarm then sets about inserting the camera into it. The alarm won’t work anymore – he takes the battery out just to be sure – but once he’s reattached it to the ceiling it looks exactly like it did before.

He stops at the door of the bathroom, considers the layout for a moment. He surveys the walls, his gloved hands gently sliding across the tiles. He knows he has to put a camera in here, but there is no obvious location. If he puts one in the ceiling beside the fan, the steam would likely obscure the vision. There is no one spot that will capture both the shower and the rest of the room. The only option, in that case, is two separate cameras – preferably in places the steam won’t reach. He runs hot water in the shower with the fan running, watches where the steam comes to rest on the surfaces. The glass of the shower screen, the mirror, the steel handrail beside the toilet. Anywhere lower than waist height is safe from fogging the lens. The towel rail is attached to the wall with a small screw. That’ll do. He has a camera mounted in a screw head; it wasn’t cheap or easy to find but he’s glad he spent the extra money now. He carefully removes the screw from the towel rail and replaces it with the camera. Then he places the second camera in the light fitting above the mirror, just below the fan.

When he has installed all the cameras, he finds the crawl space access. He drops one cable down through the light fitting in the lounge, another into the smoke alarm in the bedroom, runs a third along the wall to the towel rail and the light fitting in the bathroom. The switch board just inside the front door opens to reveal a panel of new circuit breakers. He runs all the cables from the cameras down through the same switch as the hot water service.
