“Are you sure? You look a little antsy.”

Reagan glanced to her mom and friends who were still chatting and drinking wine. Satisfied they were occupied, Reagan pulled Carly into the hallway. “I got a text from Jill. She told me she misses me.”

“Aww,” Carly replied with a sweet smile before shaking her head and holding up a hand. “Sorry, wait. Which reaction do you want? Do you still want me to hate her?”

“I never wanted you to hate her. I just…What does she want?”

“You can ask her and find out.”

Reagan stared at the phone in her hand, her brow furrowed. “No. Not yet. I need some more time.”

“Take all the time you need then.” Carly took a deep breath and let it out. “I don’t know if I should tell you this, but the rumor mill says she’s being a terror at work.”

“How so?”

Carly shrugged. “I only know what I hear, but supposedly she’s working all the time, yelling at people. More than she had been, at least. People are wondering what happened since she’d been better for a while. I try to stay out of it.”

“Oh.” Reagan chewed the inside of her bottom lip. Was it because of the breakup? Or was it because that’s who Jill really was?

“Reagan, Carly,” Gwen called from the other room. “It’s time for presents.”

“Be right there,” Carly replied.

Reagan grabbed hold of Carly’s wrist. “Please don’t say anything to them. I really don’t want to get into it tonight.”

“No problem. But I’m here whenever you need me. Okay?”

“I know. Thanks.”

Carly patted her arm and Reagan followed her into the living room where the others were seated around the room, a small pile of presents on the coffee table.

Reagan pushed the thought of Jill out of her mind. At least for now. She knew Jill would be waiting for her in her dreams. Like she did every night.

When Jill woke up the next morning, she was exhausted and completely wrung out. After leaving work last night, she had come home to her condo and wallowed in her unending loneliness. Even a couple glasses of wine and some chill music had done nothing to squash the ache in her chest when she’d realized that Reagan wasn’t going to text her back. No matter how many times she had checked her texts, she had never gotten a reply, and she had fallen asleep with the phone in her hand.
