Jill helped transfer salads and the entrees she’d chosen to plates. She didn’t know what Kathy would like so she’d chosen three different options—steak, roast chicken, and salmon— hoping at least one of them would work for her. Knowing Reagan and her love of food, Jill knew she’d be happy with any of the three, and Jill would take whatever was left.

She thought that keeping busy with dishing up the food would stall the probable interrogation from Kathy. She’d never met any of her partners’ parents before, mainly because she’d never been with one long enough to warrant a meetup. Reagan’s mom clearly meant a lot to her, and Jill didn’t want to say something stupid that would ruin their new relationship.

Kathy’s voice broke her away from her thoughts. “It was sweet of you to do this. I heard you’re not really known for that…sweetness.”

Okay, ouch, but true. Jill cleared her throat. “That’s true. I’d like to think, though, that I have my moments, and I am trying more. Your daughter makes me want to try.”

“That’s all I ask. And all anyone can really do. You’re good for her. Just make sure to let her be good for you too.”

“I promise.”

“So, what made you choose Wren?”

“Well, I didn’t know where you lived so I needed to enlist Gwen’s help.”

“Very sneaky,” Reagan said as she reappeared.

Reagan grazed her hand along Jill’s lower back, which earned her a shy smile. “I didn’t know what else to do. I wanted it to be a surprise so I couldn’t just ask you for the address.”

“I’m not complaining.” Reagan kissed her. “Guess I need to thank Gwen too.”

After settling in the dining room, Reagan opened a bottle of wine and poured each of them a glass. Jill looked around at the food and a sense of panic hit her. “Shit, you’re probably tired of eating from your own restaurants.” Her eyes widened as she looked at Kathy. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say sh…that.”

Kathy patted her hand and chuckled. “You certainly don’t need to watch your language around me. Reagan’s father was known for his colorful language…while he cooked…watched sports…”

“Did any type of furniture assembly,” Reagan added with a laugh.

“Lord, that was the worst. I’m so glad you took over that job once you were a teenager. And also never apologize for bringing food from any of their restaurants. If I could afford Gwen, I would have her make all my meals.”

With that, Kathy dug into her meal, and Jill turned her attention to Reagan. “And you don’t mind either that I stopped at Wren?”
