“Better. Even though we had time to prepare, it still felt like a shock when…um…once he was gone. I don’t know how she stayed so strong through it all. I think the trip has been healing. We’ve spent a lot of time talking. She’s also taken some time for herself and gone hiking or into town for a little shopping. This cabin has always been our favorite spot as a family, and I’m so happy she still wants to come here for future vacations.”

“That’s great to hear. I’m glad you two spent the time together.”

“Me too. I’m lucky to have her.” Reagan replayed what she just said and immediately flashed back to the type of person Maureen was. “I wish you had that.”

“I know. Me too,” Jill whispered. She said nothing else and just as Reagan was about to pull the phone away from her ear to make sure the call hadn’t dropped, Jill said, “I miss you.”

Reagan’s smile grew so big it almost hurt her cheeks. “I miss you too. What have you been up to this week?”

“Mostly just work. Oh, I finally finished season eleven of Drag Race.”

“Yes! Sorry your favorite didn’t win,” Reagan replied, and they chatted for a few minutes about the final results. The comforting warmth of Jill’s voice had Reagan curling into the chair and she rested her head against the back. She couldn’t wait to see her again. Unfortunately, the coming week would be busy with day-to-day work obligations as well as finalizing details for her dad’s benefit. That thought alone made her tired, and when she couldn’t hold it back anymore, a yawn broke the conversation.

“Shit, it’s getting late so I should let you go. Let me know when you’re back in town?”

“Definitely.” Reagan paused and then whispered, “I can’t wait to see you.”

“Me too. Sweet dreams, Reagan.”

“’Night, Jill.” Reagan ended the call and gathered the blankets in her arms. She closed her eyes and breathed in the crisp air. She’d miss this place, but she was excited to head home. It meant she was another day closer to seeing Jill.
