My cheeks feel hot. I don’t want to have to deal with a wink or smile or something, but luckily she doesn’t do that. She’s focusing on her own cup, so I turn all my focus on mine, enjoying the feeling of the hot cup almost burning my fingertips. My group home didn’t allow coffee, and I didn’t realize how badly I missed it. My mom let me drink coffee from the time I was little, and even though it made me pull faces, I loved the dark, bitter taste. The Morgans have much nicer coffee than I’m used to, and I inhale, letting the smooth, rich flavor fill my mouth. Sitting here feels like a tiny moment with my mom.

Emma pours her own cup and then settles with her back against the counter. There’s a long pause, and suddenly I feel hopeful. Maybe now is a good time use the computer? Before I can head for the dining room, Simon raises his spatula and punctuates the air with it, giving Emma a meaningful look.

“Oh, right! Mason, I need to check on a few of my listed properties this morning, and I could really use your help. Will you come with me? It could be a good chance to see the town.” He beams at me, and my restful moment pops like a soap bubble.

Subtle. So very subtle.

I know this tactic. I’ve said no to his earlier suggestions of pickleball and bike rides and one-on-one basketball, so now we’re moving on to I could really use your help. Honestly, it’s a good tactic, because what am I going to say? Sorry, I have to sit in my room all day again?

“Um…” My heart thuds helplessly.

Emma shifts her cup to the other hand, and I see the flash of pink on her inner wrist. I don’t want to go anywhere with Simon, but if I’m honest, the walls of that bedroom are starting to close in on me, and anything is better than being in the same room with Emma and her tattoo. “Yeah. Okay.”

Simon lights up by several watts. “How are you on a bike?”

I try to remember the last time I rode a bike but come up blank. I know I’ve ridden one, but I can’t remember where. Was it my first foster home? “Okay,” I say again.

His smile could power a small island.

Let’s fly, my pretties.

And fly we do.
