Her eyes are wide with surprise. I know I should probably take it as a warning that I’m about to create a fresh batch of awkward, but the rest comes tumbling out anyway. “Frederick inherited his first ship from his father-in-law, who was one of the very first merchants in Salem. He imported pepper because they used it to make rum, but I read that he imported flowers too, which was way less common. And…” Should I tell her this part? I go for it. “I think he’s the one who did the mermaid painting upstairs.”

Willow’s eyes were big before, but now they’re enormous. “How did you know all that?” she asks. “Demands” is more like it.

My cheeks start to feel hot. I could go with the truth: Because I’m obsessed with a painting that looks like you, so I researched everything I could. But I can’t go back to the feeling of despair I had out there on the sidewalk. “Um… well, there’s a lot of information online about Salem’s history as a trading port. And Frederick Bell was easy to look up, especially because he was so prominent. And… ah. I sort of like researching?”

This is an understatement, and probably the sort of nerdy detail you aren’t supposed to admit to someone you’re very attracted to, but not being myself feels pointless at this moment.

She blinks up at me, her eyes widening. “You are the helper,” she murmurs. Or at least I think that’s what she murmurs.

“Sorry?”

She blinks again, her face flushing as she glances back up at me. “I said you are really helpful.” She takes a deep breath and seems to center herself. “Show me the painting?”

– 21 – Willow

I’d found sage’s letter almost immediately. Once I snuck into the house, I saw it peeking out from under the sofa, right next to where I’d thrown the Book of Shadows. If the aunts hadn’t told me about it, I wouldn’t even have known to look for it. I’d been puzzling over the first clue—find Thalia—when Mason and I had almost collided.

And now I’m back in the house with him, staring at a mermaid that he is adamant is my doppelgänger. I’m honestly sort of flattered that Mason thinks I look like her. The problem is, he’s wrong.
