Not on broomsticks or anything, although at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if my mom whipped out a black cloak and matching black hat and zipped into the sky. Instead, we take off as though attempting to break a land record, Violet and my mom whispering furtively ahead of us while Poppy and I bring up the rear. I’m not sure if Poppy has been assigned the job of distracting me, but she’s giving it her all.

“Witchy Goodness,” Poppy says, clanking her walker toward a small storefront. “Do me a favor and don’t buy a single thing from that place. You didn’t hear it from me, but they get their spells from the Internet.” She sighs heavily, her eyes wide behind her glasses. “Witches these days. You know how they are.”

I do not in fact know how they are, but I’m too busy trying to eavesdrop on my mom and Violet’s conversation to say so.

My mom seems to be trying to give away Sage’s house. “I’ll sign it over to you today. Think, you could use it for your shop and your meetings—”

“Impossible!” Violet says. “She left it for you.”

“A bed-and-breakfast,” my mom continues, her voice climbing in desperation. “You could even sell it yourselves.”

“Impossible,” Violet repeats.

Definitely the house. Why is she so desperate to get rid of it? I take up a half gallop to try to hear more, and Poppy shuffles along beside me, surprisingly fast with her walker. “Dark Moon Magic! If you need a banishing spell, that’s your place. Although I’d stay away from anything curse-related. Obviously.”

“Mmm,” I manage, giving the shop a quick glance. The windows are lined with crystals and candles, and a small card table has been set up with a sign that says BESPOKE TAROT/ORACLE READINGS. APPOINTMENT ONLY.

My mom says something under her breath to Violet, and Violet throws her arms in the air. “Nonsense! You read Poppy’s letter, didn’t you? It was all part of Sage’s plan.”

What plan? I’m so eager to hear what they’re saying that I get too close and accidentally step on the back of my mom’s shoe. My mom shoots a glance at me, and I slow down, doing my best to look interested in what Poppy is saying.

Violet is now waving her arms around. “… all over the house. She spent months preparing—”

“Not so loud,” my mom says, and Violet drops her voice. Frustration bubbles in my chest. How am I going to figure out what is going on?
