  25. About the Author

He was there—on the other side of the glass. And he was staring at her with his mad eyes. His shoulders were so wide and menacing.

“What the hell?” she said, gripping the edge of the desk and keeping the phone pressed to her ear.

“Let me in.” He nodded at the luckily locked door. It was weird to hear him in her ear and faintly through the glass, seeing his lips move.

“No, no I won’t, and why…why are you here?”

“To see you.”

“Bloody hell. How long have you been out there?” No wonder she’d heard traffic, it was the road at the end of Change Street.

“A while, but, Megan, for you I’ll wait for as long as it takes.”

“You’re mad.”

“Not mad.” He paused and patted his hand over his T-shirt, flattening it against where she knew his tattoo to be. “I’m just in love, and being in love makes me very determined. My broken heart needs mending, and you’re the only one who can do that.”

A kernel of fear grew within her. She’d never get away from this. She couldn’t have been more blunt the night before, yet here he was, lurking outside her flat and her office, waiting for her. What was the matter with him? And had he done it before, this waiting around for her?

She recalled that night she’d first had a drink with James. How freaked out she’d been just crossing the cobbles to the bar because she’d felt sure someone was watching her from the darkest of the shadows.

Dylan?

She’d bet her last stiletto that it had been him.

She stared at him, anger and nerves tangling her emotions. She’d never get away from his craziness. He was messing with her head the way he always had. Trying to control her. Well, she wouldn’t let him, not this time. It seemed he’d already destroyed her fledgling relationship with James—the first decent man she’d met in a long time—but she wouldn’t let him destroy her newfound confidence and sense of self. “You have to leave.”

“Or what, you’ll call Brendon again? Like I’m really scared of him.” He shook his head and sneered.

“No, the police. This is harassment, Dylan. There are laws to stop people like you doing this kind of thing.”

“I’m your fiancé, Megan, what will they say? I’m entitled to be with you.”

“No you’re not! We’re over. I sent you the ring back.” She shook her bare finger at him through the glass. “Now fuck off.”

“Not until you agree to meet me, later.”

“No. No way.” Really?

“Then I’m not going anywhere.”

She sighed and rubbed her fingers over her forehead. There was only one thing for it. She’d have to do it. “Okay, where?”
