I didn’t kill Simon. However hard those cops try to twist the facts and trip me up, they can’t change that.

I didn’t kill him. Which means someone else did, and I know who.

I’m being framed and I need to figure out how to prove it.

BRANDI

By the time the guards call for me, the sun has already gone down. I don’t know what time it is, but I know visiting hours are almost over. The announcement was made a few minutes ago.

My heart almost leaps from my chest when I see Nate straddle the stool on the opposite side of the booth. I thought he wasn’t going to show up.

I try not to think about what I look like as I stare at him from behind the glass. He’s wearing a white T-shirt and sweatpants, his chest stretching the T-shirt. His eyes are harder than they’ve ever been. Wary. And there’s something else, something like betrayal, but slightly worse than that. He looks at me, but avoids my eyes, then picks up the receiver on the counter.

I reach down and pick mine up too.

He holds the handset to his ear, but still won’t look at me.

I sigh. “Babe, come on. It’s me.”

Nate shakes his head, trying to understand. “I don’t even know what that means right now.” There’s an edge to his voice that almost sounds like suspicion.

It’s obvious he’s been filled in. There is no need to ask. It’s all over his face. He knows what they’re saying I did. I just hope he doesn’t believe them. He can’t. He knows me. He knows I’m not capable of murder.

“Nate, you know I don’t care about anyone but you.”

His head snaps up, as if he’s surprised I would even have the gall to say something like that to him right now. “So what, you were just pretending to be into him so he’d change his mind and take you to Milan?”

“No!” I take a breath and wait until the rage inside me cools into something like calm. “Nate. Listen to me. You’re the only guy I’ve ever been with, I swear.”

As the words leave my mouth I cringe inside, because I’ve never told him this, that I was a virgin when we first slept together, and I don’t know why it embarrasses me so much, but it does, and I’m trying to hide it, and I know I’m failing, but I hope it’s enough.
